Royal Oak Appleby

On the edges of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks beside the fishing River Eden, and surrounded by the dramatic and beautiful Northern Pennines, we would love to welcome you to our late 16th century Royal Oak Inn, in the heritage medieval town of Appleby. The town has the reputedly best example of an 11th century main street dominated by the preserved Norman Castle and surrounded by 13th century churches. The Royal Oak is the best location for exploring surrounding areas, as a one-night stop while completing one of the many well-known walks, or as a break on your journey from South to Scotland or vice versa.

Appleby Castle

Steeped in history Appleby Castle is one of the few Norman castles to have been occupied continuously since its building. Situated at the foot of the Pennines it is one of most beautiful castles in the North of England with its dramatic architecture and stunning views. You can stay in this castle and experience living history. There are 7 bedrooms in the castle, some with ensuite and others without. There are three self catering holiday cottages in the inner bailey, each equipped with log burners, wifi and fully equipped kitchen. Appleby Golf course is less than one mile away and we are 15 miles from the Lake District. Appleby Castle is the ideal wedding venue. Several areas are licensed for civil ceremonies. Imagine celebrating your special day in the country retreat of the Queen's Champion, who fought the Spanish Armada. Experience the peace and beauty of this amazing wedding venue, the favourite home of Lady Anne Clifford.

Wonderful authentic and original

We had such an amazing stay. I have always wanted to stay in a castle and this did not disappoint. Room was beautiful, with a solid oak four poster bed, creaky floor boards and original oak furniture. Thankfully we never encountered the ghosts here. The decor in the room was opulent with all the original features. Breakfast was plentiful and very tasty. The grounds were lovely and there was a great walk around the moat. All the staff were friendly and attentive. All in all a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend

We stayed at The Bull as part of our house buying process. At the end of a long , arduous moving day process we were looking for somewhere to have good food , comfy beds and time to unwind and recover . We were not disappointed ! The owners made us very welcome in the middle of winter and we truly appreciated having some excellent food and a availing ourselves of a deep hot bath. The Bull is in a fabulous location for walking adventures in Yorkshire and Eden valley. Excellent value for money and we would highly recommend . Worth knowing - Dog friendly in the bar and facilities for drying walking gear if required. If your looking to stay in peak season weekends you should plan early as understandably they are popular.

Unwind and relax in characterful and cosy guest bedrooms filled with all the comforts of home. Tuck into fabulous food, hearty and filling, in the restaurant and enjoy a drink in a cosy fire nook for colder days or on the spectacular outdoor terrace with views over the Lakeland when the sun is shining. Part of The House of Daniel Thwaites collection. ** Please note bridge improvement work is due to start in September 2019, but The Crown Inn, Pooley Bridge is still open during this time. **

Unwelcoming and unfriendly.

Reviewed By Haxby-Rhino

Over the course of our short family break in Pooley Bridge, we tried to get in to The Crown twice on consecutive days. Both times we were met at the door with a barracade. The pub looked empty, but was informed by the man at the door in a blunt and rather rude tone that they couldn't accommodate us for a drink and that food was about to stop - this was at 5pm. He wasn't interested in trying to explain why we couldn't come in, nor any shred of apologetic tone. So we lleft feeling very unwelcome. In contrast, the staff over the road at the Pooley Bridge Inn were very friendly, accommodating and efficient and we stayed there a good few hours.

Fantastic!

Reviewed By tonymI7015LS

As frequent visitors to the lakes, and Pooley Bridge, we decided to stay somewhere we'd never stayed before, and chose The Queens Head Inn. We are so glad we did! We all had a great stay! The building is huge inside, and pub is old fashioned with low ceilings and dark roof beams everywhere, and in total contrast, the ensuite rooms are really modern, and have been decorated superbly! We also had 2 dogs, and someone with a rollator to accommodate, and this was no issue at all. Food was delicious and the staff were amazing! Special thanks to the tall blonde lady who really looked after us! This trip was a sentimental trip, and The Queens Hetad will never fully appreciate the huge part they've played in it. Thank you all so much! We definitely recommend this place and will definitely be back!
