A dining experience not to be missed and well worth the drive out to Darfield. Thank you Hamish for delicious meals - so attractively presented, perfectly cooked and a delight to eat. Excellent service and a charming venue in a beautiful setting. We will be back!!

We stopped in for an early lunch given the reviews here and found it disappointing and needing improvement.
The Caesar salad lacked any flavor and had no anchovies. The lettuce seemed on the verge of going bad. My partner’s omelette was poorly cooked and the salad was disappointing. The restaurant could easily upgrade to fresh ground pepper on the table.

I don't often give a 5 rating. I've eaten at many bakeries over the past four weeks and most get a 3 rating.
Darfield Bakery bucks the trend because of two key things: great range of food available and lots of staff serving.
Sweet or savoury foods are available plus there's things that can be ordered separately. A great range. My vanilla slice was perfect.
Drinks are ordered at the checkout and delivered to the table once made. All very efficient and queues disappear very quickly.
It was busy when we were there but there are a few areas to eat and they are cleverly separated so as to make the place seem much more comfortable.
A great stop for something to eat.
Highly recommended.

Sunday morning early looking for a coffee and breakfast come across Doughboys on main highway. Looks good as you approach, looks good as you enter with plenty of choice - or so it seems!! We decide upon continental breakfast and beans on toast. Sorry no fruit so no continental breakfast . Ok can we have eggs on toast - no , you are to have full breakfast but you can substitute item. Ok can we substitute beans for hash browns - no ! In the end the only choice we had was s full breakfast as per the menu!! There was also a language problem due to the poor understanding of English by the server. Ridiculous!! We did not stay!!
Avoid this place !!

We stopped at the burger wagon in Springs Junction midway between Nelson and Christchurch and left feeling angry, dissatisfied and cheated out of money.
I am not a vegetarian, but often opt for veggie food as I like the flavours, so the 'Vego burger' comprising of a chickpea pattie with hummus, garlic aioli, grilled capsicum and lettuce sounded delicious. When we ordered one of those, a Venison burger and 2 flat whites I was told by the staff that "we no longer stock the "patties", we make them up live with beans". I thought this sounded strange but still ordered it as the rest of the ingredients (minus the chickpea pattie) sounded nice.
After a bit of a wait we received our disappointing order. My 'Vego burger' consisted of 2 pineapple rings, beetroot, lots of relish and lettuce, and a little aioli - no beans, capsicum or hummus.
I voiced my disappointment to the wagon staff, who rudely exclaimed "I TOLD you we make it up on the spot". I tried to explain that he'd made it sound like it was just the pattie being replaced by beans but the rest of the burger would be the same as on the menu. He was argumentative, put some kidney beans in my burger and gave it back to me.
I was trying to explain to him that if I'd known the entire burger was different then I wouldn't have ordered it, I would have opted for a different one, but instead he turned his back on me and spoke about me with the other customers as I left which is just petty.
I didn't receive an apology for the forgotten beans or for the false advertising. Unfortunately I feel that because this highway is so busy now due to the Kaikoura Road being closed, that businesses like this think they can treat customers poorly as they are only passing through and chances are they will never be seen again - perhaps forgetting word-of-mouth is a powerful tool.

The lamb rack was the best lamb rack I have ever had. There was more than enough for four people yet it was only recommended for two. The flavour was perfect, the roast potatoes were perfect. Would totally recommend trying it.

Called in here for lunch on a drive back to Christchurch and was pleasantly surprised. Had some of the salads on display for lunch and they were delicious. Lots of healthy, reasonably priced options available and the staff were lovely and friendly. Plenty of tables available (some outside too) to sit and eat or you can takeaway.

Had a couple of venison burgers and some chips last night. One of the burgers had specific needs due to food allergies. NO problem! Thanks for making delicious food so easy.So glad you enjoyed it!!
