we went to this restaurant for late lunch/early dinner mid June 2019 and the whole experience was great. The view from their veranda was amazing and the food is authentic Cretan food, very good olive oil, salad, appetizers and fish. The waiter George was very friendly, helpful and honest. We were also very pleasantly surprised by the bill which was very reasonable. Highest recommendation for great food with amazing, romantic views!

This is a traditional Greek restaurant, which is near the Sea. We serve fresh fish every day and special Cretan cuisine. All our products are made from fresh ingredients.

Kalamaki was just a "side" destination for the late afternoon on our trip around Matala. Ordering a Greek coffee in SunSet Palemtis was a good idea. Beside a very good coffee and friendly staff, what remains is a nice location above the beach. Which is offering an opportunity for a long, inspiring walk.

Yiannis

Reviewed By Jamesdmd

Yiannis has been running his Taverna for 35 plus years ie before electricity and the strip in front. He has a book to explain the no menu and a wonderful cartoon story done by somebody else who gets the story and Yiannis. This is basic and rustic in the true sense. Don’t worry about food safety. His kitchen is immaculate and very organised. It has to be! You sit down with a beer on outside tables and wait wondering what happens. Then suddenly small dishes appear on the table like machine gun fire.Yiannis describes them in limited english. Anchovies , small fried fish you eat whole. Huge potato chips from his own farm. A blinding series of dips made by him. A smoked aubergine dip was a first fab for us. Taramasalata fresh and unusual. Courgette flowers stuffed with rice and soured cream dip. Risoto full of flavour and vegetables which was ideal for our grandchildren. Fresh large cooked prawns. Ham fritters. Boiled vegetables. Green beans. Chick peas stew. Haricot beans.olives and tacos bread. The table is overflowing. Yiannis understands the dilemma and appears with plastic boxes to take home for the next day. Finally his plums and cherries. He is wonderful with the children. There is no charge for them. The fixed price is embarrassingly cheap for the amount of food skill and his hard work. We took some un finished plates back into the kitchen to help him and us to leave some room for what was coming next. This is the joy of the interactive experience. Don’t go if you don’t like to let go and enjoy the moment on holiday! Don’t go if you don’t get authentic cuisine. Do go if you are are a Kalimaki regular like us to understand the contrast with the high end restaurants with big menus. Do go if you like organic food in season and appreciate the connection between food and land. His cucumber was so tasteful almost like a pear. Yiannis wont be here for ever and in years to come there will be nobody like him. We discussed politics at the end with two local gentleman with gestures and a few words to understand the feelings. This is cultural cuisine history in the modern world. I doubt Yiannis has ever heard of trip advisor and he is all the better for that!!

Diogenis Place

As regular visitors of Kalamaki (15 times in the past 20 years) we have been to Diogenis place many times and have never been disappointed! This is traditional Greek cuisine at its best! Diogenis' mother is really cooking with heart and soul and produces a variety of excellent greek dishes.Anything from the over (ouside of the restaurant) is absolutely delicious. On Friday evenings there is usually a band playing traditional Greek music ad often some of the Greek customers start dancing, and if you are really lucky, you can see Diogenis' father Nikos dance on top of a chair, or rather: the handrail of a chair! Most of the time, we just order a number of dishes and share the excellent food; that way you can get a taste of 4 or 5 different dishes.

That is a place you should visit to watch the sunset and eat some of the best delicacies of the area. Far for from the crowded zone of the Kalamaki beach but just 2 minutes walk from there, you can enjoy fish, salads or meat with the kind help of Fragkis, the owner of the place. Choose for sure the crab salad (excellent recipe), tuna salad and why not the stuffed meatball and the well grilled pancetta. Let the sea breeze relax you while sipping a glass of nice Cretan wine ! It's a no risk choice.

Aristidis

Aristidis is a very large restaurant : they have nice inside seating, but also on the footpath and, the most popular tables are beach-side under cover. Service is friendly and very efficient. The team is relaxed, but Greek with blue chairs and white tables. We ordered 4 fish dishes and 1 desert ; with plenty of small jugs of the local wine, we ended up paying 75 Euros for our party of 4. Having a nice meal with a glass of wine, sitting on the beach watching the sun go down . . . good night out.

Taverna Aristodimos

Spent the day driving along the south coast route from Elounda via Staying for 3 nights in Neo Kalamaki we strolled past this gorgeous looking taverna feeling thirsty and in need of a swim ... the inviting aqua and white decor and the charming smiles of the young waiting staff beckoned us in and were we glad they did ! We started with ice cold Mythos & Gin n Tonic served with nibbles overlooking the virtually empty beach with plentiful umbrellas & loungers, free for taverna customers. After a refreshing dip in the waves, supper was on the cards ... local specialities including Aubergines baked with minced lamb & cheese, chicken in a white wine sauce and the prawn saganaki was spectacular ! Complimentary olive tapenade with bread and milk pudding and fruit and a rather large jug of raki completed another splendid meal .... so splendid in fact that we returned for lunch the following day to enjoy the sun loungers and some expertly grilled Sea Bream, Prawns and Octopus , fresh Horta / Green beans and cheese saganaki ...copious quantities of local rosé, yet more raki and it’s still less than 20 € a head for more than we could eat or drink ! Wonder why people rave about Cretan hospitality.. look no further !

This is definitely the best restaurant in greater Kalamaki area. Located in an excellent location, just beside the coast, it serves a variety of well cooked local dishes. Barbecue and fish dishes are also in the menu, and worths attention. This is a family based set up, by a lovely Cretan family; simply, they serve what they eat themselves. Very reasonable prices. They certainly get tones of satisfaction while you deliver they hospitality. A must “non touristic” visit, in a very touristic spot.
