Catfish Hotel

We arrived after church on Sunday, and the restaurant was full. We didn't have a very long wait, and were seated by the window, which overlooks the parking lot, with the river beyond that. Our server was quick to spot us and bring us menus and take our drink order. DH and dad ordered catfish, mom had steak, and I had grilled shrimp. Our family eats catfish on a regular basis, and this was not the best we've ever had (I tried a piece). My shrimp was good, mom's steak was good---and very large---but the sides were lacking. "Legendary" hushpuppies were actually quite bland, and so was the "signature" coleslaw. It wasn't HORRIBLE, but it wasn't worth the 2 hour drive to try this place out.

Top O' The River

Reviewed By GreenUnicorn - Southern NJ

After a busy day touring Shiloh and then hiking at Pickwick Landing State Park, we decided on dinner at Top 'o the River (although there is no river in this location!) on our way back to Corinth.

We enjoyed the food, with the exception of the hush puppies. We just don't get hush puppies--greasy dough. The free coleslaw and onions were delicious, the cornbread ok. We definitely enjoyed our boiled shrimp appetizer, which was served on ice. Both our kabob platters, chicken and shrimp, were cooked perfectly. Our baked potatoes were also good.

The main problem was actually getting the food. The restaurant wasn't very busy at the early hour. We asked our server more than once, and she kept telling us our food would be out soon, but it wasn't for quite some time. She did apologize and offer us a free dessert, which we did not accept after such a full dinner, even with the offer to take it home.

The restaurants serves beer or wine coolers. We stuck with water.

Overall prices were moderate and we felt our dinner at Top 'o the River was a good value.

The Outpost Pickwick Dam

After a very long day traveling on the road, we were driving the Trans America Trail, we stopped here for dinner. The Reuben sandwich is one of the best you will find anywhere! The wait staff is excellent, 4 different waitresses stopped by our table to see if we needed anything, asked if the food was okay, etc. On the way out we met the owner Jay, what a great guy! He told us how he and his wife bought the place, remodeled it and added the additional dining room. These two are very hardworking and dedicated to making the Outpost a success!

This place is the best food in Pickwick. From breakfast to dinner it is great. No alcohol but the dessert makes it worth the trip.

Average food. Average service. Below average looking place inside and out. There's a walk-up window where you can order soft serve ice cream, burgers, etc. Actually a little pricey on the burgers. I think there's a catfish special night on Thursday and the joint is packed with locals. We tried it a few years ago. Not bad, but average catfish.

I like eating at the places where locals go, and this was recommended to us, but the barbecue was cold, and everything else was pretty so-so. Note it's name, so I think we had a right to expect decent barbecue.

A small place with great service and awesome food, The fried catfish was fresh and cooked to perfection. Fried okra was an unexpected surprise. Order it. Wait staff was very attentive and could not ask for better. Cole slaw was not to my liking but I prefer a more non-sweet drier cole slaw but wife liked it. Guess I lose to her palate. If in the area, Do Drop In!!

We stopped in last week for dinner. There are two eateries combined at this location, and the signage was nondescript, and we ended up in the beach restaurant, not the "fine" dining area. We switched to the "fine" dining restaurant, ordered drinks and waited 10 minutes for drinks. The place was less than half full. Ordered apps: mozzarella sticks tasted funny, and smothered fries were over salted. 35.00 steak: server did not ask how to cook. This was the second choice of steak, as server notified us the first steak had to be thawed, in order to be cooked. The steak was smaller than the potato. Blackened shrimp Alfredo: had a greasy cheese sauce. Lasagna..... nonexistent, as server notified us one minute before he brought the other two entrees out, that there was no lasagna. I would not send someone I disliked here. The server tried his best, but the food was stacked against him.

We tried many of the restaurants in Corinth, Iuka, Counce, Pickwick and Savanah over the past three weeks. We were excited to try The Rib Cage. We stopped in for lunch and the food was just - OK. Nothing wrong but nothing to write home about. Our service was very good. We still laugh about the restrooms - go out the side door. No they are not an outhouse but when we were advised how to find them, it had us both thinking they were.

We might try them again, hoping we caught the kitchen on an off day.
