Mexico City is definitely a “thumbs up”. You can get a good inexpensive meal, cold beer or great margarita at lunch Monday-Friday or in the evening Monday-Saturday. They do not accept credit cards but an ATM machine is on location. Staff is very friendly and you know it is a favorite of the locals. It is located in a residential area so parking is tight.

There is no sit down service, they serve meals in a meal box you can carry down to the park or wherever. Easy to get to from Highway 50, you simply go from 1st street (Highway 50) to 3rd Street, two blocks over. The masa in the tamales is light, fluffy, not wet and sticky. The pork has some real bite to it, like it should be. If you don't want spice, get the anaheim and cheese tamale. Burritos are available. Tamales by the dozen is why I stop.

I read the reviews. I realized we were taking a chance. But it was three doors down from the hotel and gives the nearby hotels a 10% discount. And we were tired from hiking Vogel Canyon. From the start things went bad. No silverware on the table, no wait staff for five minutes and there were more wait staff than people, menus arrive by another staff, and we wait. No water offered. Finally, she comes to our table and takes our drink order, brings our water and disappears. About five minutes later she comes out with our shared margarita. The weakest marg ever made!! She takes our order and disappears again. We look around and everybody is showing signs of discomfort about waiting for food. Another staff takes pity on us and brings us a tiny basket of chips with a really good sauce and a paper napkin with a fork, no knife. I had ordered a chile rellano and didn't look forward to cutting it with a tinware fork. I guess the cook got off his smoke break, because food started coming out of the kitchen quickly. Except for ours. After too much time and other people who came in after us getting their food, our meals arrives. Bland doesn't begin to describe the food. From rice to tacos, this was tasteless stuff. No refills on water even though the glasses were clearly empty. We ate because we were starved, and then we waited for the check, and waited, and waited. I got up and went to the register and waited there. The only reasons this is not getting a terrible rating is the chip sauce was excellent and the 10% discount. But we could not be dragged into this place again, there's a MacD's nearby if we want lousy food and awful service.

I've passed by this restaurant during several work trips to La Junta. I've avoided stopping because there was never much customer traffic. I took this as a sign that maybe it wasn't very good. But I was wrong. I ordered three tacos- the adobada, carnitas and carne asada tacos were quite good and fresh. The total bill was just over $8 dollars. The menu has typical items like smothered burritos and rolled tacos, but also has great street style tacos and other authentic Mexican items like sopes. The ambience is clean and we'll lit with a fresh salsa bar. I'll be returning on my next trip to try some other fare on the menu.

The waitress warned me that the green chile was not the normal one and she was right. It was extremely hot, having the seeds of red pepper in it. The dish was red in color, not green. I was able to eat the meat, not the soup. If you order a chicken or beef enchilada, you get a cheese enchilada with a little meat sprinkled on top. They seem to keep pretty busy here, so maybe some of the other dishes are better.
