Wish I would have taken a photo of the best banana pudding I ever had. The home-made onion rings were over the top as well. Just good home cooking!

On our way home to Houston and decided to do something different. Food was good. Service was a little slow. A family had a son who was probably 5 and was very loud and disturbing to others. We commented on it twice and no one did anything so this lessened our experience. I have raised 6 daughters and know that children are not always going to be in a good mood but I would never put their misery on anyone else.

My husband & I stopped here on the way to Kingswood. Really good "down home" barbecue. Nothing fancy, just perfectly smoked pork ribs, delicious chopped brisket sandwiches, and scrumptious potato salad. Don't be fooled by the way the outside of the restaurant looks, go in& get ready to let Duke take you to barbecue heaven.

Local diner that has a friendly feel. 1960's interior that has windows on 3 side, so it is not dark and closed in like The Ranch Hand cafe, a few miles south on the same highway.
Food wise, my 1/2 lb Burger was not one that I would return for. The bun was too small (size matters) and not high quality. I buy better buns at HEB grocery, made by HEB , Petrich Farm, Sunbeam or Mrs Baird's. For my hamburgers taste at home or in restaurants, the bun is as important as the rest of the fixings. The bun just seemed in the dry side, not soft. The other thing was that the burger came out at close to room temp, so the meat was not "hot off the grill". The bacon on the burger was fatty. They said they make everything fresh, except the onion rings. The onion rings or just like the fast food type you get from Burger King or Whataburger. I wish they could find the time to make them fresh and find a great recipe for them (like The Ranch Hand). They had a list of great milk shakes on the board, but they need a better burger, and better onion rings to go with it.
Co worker got a combination BBQ sandwich, ( I think it had beef, pork and sausage in with the sauce) and he said was great! Maybe getting the BBQ sandwich would be a good choice. We both liked the creamy coleslaw.
Parking was good and our waitstaff was nice and helpful. About 15 to 20 tables in the restaurant, so not too big. If I went back I might try the chicken fried steak, just to see if it is worth coming back for. Hope it is a good one. One other positive note, the fountain coke was perfect. More syrup like they use to serve and less carbonation. It tasted great. I would love to try a coke float with that.

Hilltop Restaurant and Herb Garden, a famous East Texas landmark founded by renowned herbalist and cook, Madalene Hill, has been part of The Retreat at Artesian Lakes for over 22 years. The quaint dining room overlooks a lake and is surrounded by windows to enjoy the breathtaking view. Outside, a deck provides additional seating surrounded by trees and potted herbs. The staff is always happy to provide baskets of old bread to feed several varieties of fish and turtles. The herb garden and a quiet gazebo are located within walking distance.
After being picked up in a horse drawn carriage that takes you to the restaurant, begin the glutton! Pastries, quiche (my favorite), variety of fruit, bacon, eggs, sausange, toast, muffins will all the trimings. Fresh coffee, juice, milk, sodas. Plus entertainment from the wild life.

Everything on the menu is exceptional. Two of my favorites are the chicken alferdo and the chicken fried steak. The fried mushroom appetizer is a great way to kick your meal off and ending it with the banana vanilla wafer pudding is perfect. Don't blink 'cause you could miss this place.

Whataburger is a Texas tradition. Great service and boy, what a burger. Virtually all Whataburgers offer great service, but this Cleveland location goes beyond great. Friendly, efficient staff. Quick delivery of your order. What's not to like. On top of that, you get one of the best burgers anywhere around. We love the new Root Beer Shakes, too. Reminds you of an oldtime root beer float. If you are passing by, the Cleveland Whataburger is worth a visit.

When we make our trips to the area, we have to meet out family here for at least one meal. The food is authentic Tex-Mex and the service is friendly and fast. Prices are reasonable. Can't say any more than that we come back as often as we can.

It has been renamed Agave and I believe it is under new management. I've only had one dish there, the chicken tortilla soup, which is good most of the time, except when it is exceptionally salty. Nice place, but very busy on Sundays after church.
