Auberge de Poteaupre

Just two steps away from the abbey Notre-Dame de Scourmont, the Poteaupré Inn has been welcoming you in a warm and rural vibe for more than a hundred years. The lively atmosphere will remind you of an English pub where Trappist beers and cheeses from Chimay are honored. The gourmet dishes, cooked with the Chimay products, will satisfy your taste buds. The Inn also have a large Terrace, 2 play areas and electric recharging stations for bicycles.

A bit of everything: bar, restaurant, 7 room hotel. Most important: the different beers and cheeses can be sampled over here before going to the shop under the same roof. Don't expect any charm or fine dining: this is a huge factory like place with lots of staff running around. Nevertheless: fantastic beers and cheeses.

A fairly down to earth place but none the worse for that. Both of us went for a Set Menu of typical Belgian dishes. In my case it was Cheese Croquettes, as Belgian as it comes, and Poteauflette. For those who don't know it this is a rich baked dish of potatoes, onions, cheese, beer and cream (just the job for testing out your Statin!) and, in this case, clearly assembled at the time.
Matron had a dish of mushrooms and garlic (the garlic lingered through the night!) followed by rabbit cooked in beer, which was very much to her taste. Desserts were fairly industrial but OK.
All was washed down with copious drafts of Chimay beer!
One slight caveat. We were there on a quiet, dank October evening, the kitchen is quite small and might be stretched at times in better weather when both restaurant and the tables outside are well populated.

Nicely cooked brassiere style dishes with a modern twist. Egg at 63degC is creamy and nutty. Good fish dishes in tasty butter. Outside Terrace is great. One problem, we went two times and both times a lot of waiting. It somewhat took the pleasure out of it.

We just stopped for coffee late afternoon, service was fine, the only thing worth mentioning is that Chimay centre is small and parking is limited, also the road system is narrow and mostly one way.

Edgard & Madeleine

Reviewed By Xavier R - Brussels, Belgium

Considered as one of the best restaurants around Chimay, Edgard & Madeleine has been taken over a few years ago. Inside it looks like a mix between traditionnal brasserie and gourmet restaurant.
Scallops and clams for starters were very good. Then, we had feasant for 2 as a main. It was good but overdone. For the price they ask (48€), I would clearly have expected better. Overall bill was in the 130€, for 2 starters, burned feasant, 2 beers, water, and a cognac. Had we taken wine, it would have reached around 165 at least. So definitely too expensive for what it offers.

La Malterie

Chimay is a very nice little town in Belgium, where one of the counntry's most famous beers is brewed. It also has a few nice restaurants catering for local specialties as well as game in season. La Malterie was recommended to us by the owner of the guesthouse we stayed in. It's 5 minutes walking distance from the main square and the church.
I order one of the region's specialties as a starter, consisting of "Escaveche". It's usually either trout or pike (I chose the latter) served cold in some kind of a cream/vinegar sauce and onions. It comes from a spanish recipe, and has been used over the centuries because it allows preservation of the food. Mine was quite nice, a bit too much vinegar to my taste. then we had deer for 2 as a main course. It was very tasty, and well presented. The staff is friendly and the place looks charming. We chose an affordable wiine, which turned out to be very good and matching the meal. Pricewise, I found it a bit overrated, expect 60-70€ per person without dessert. It's not the discovery of the year, but it's pretty decent if you're around.

This place had garnered great reviews on-line -- and we weren't disappointed. The steaks were top-slot, and the waiter was patient enough to put up with a motley group of guys (us, uk, Ireland, Australia, german, belgium) most of whom couldn't speak french. So great for a large party - but would've suited a romantic couple equally well

It has been a long time since I have had such good food. Language (English) was a small issue but we were able to navigate the menu and was rewarded by fabulous food. I especially loved the smoked salmon. Find your way to this restaurant and be rewarded with a great meal.

During a day trip to Chimay we were told to have lunch at this restaurant. The short trip outside the city was a full success. Their steaks ''Sauce Roquefort" & "Au Champions" were just great.
You should have a local CHIMAY Beer (3 different types) with that. NO need to have wine!
Price list for all is very reasonable! Excellent value for money. Just try it out yourself and comment .... .
