The quality of the food is good, but the guests should be aware that it is a "petiscos / tapas" place, not a "normal" restaurant. This means that each dish is small and you are supposed to order more than one and also separately order side dishes.
Nevertheless the overall price is reasonable ... although not the best option in the area.

Pleasant waiter seated us without a reservation but with the mumbled implication that we wouldn't be there long. He then hovered around our table as we reviewed the menu, impatient for us to order. Luckily I knew what wine we wanted as we didn't get the list. His recommendation was good.
The grilled veal was lovely and rare; perhaps a touch more seasoning required. You could cut it with a table knife. The local bean side dish was great.
The female staff, however, were abrupt and took the edge off the evening - the dessert menu was waggled at us from a distance, behind her back, as the waitress went to serve another table; crockery slammed about as the table was cleared.
On a separate note.....funky decor....eek!

My family really love it hear and it's good but not the best in the Chaves area. Can get quite busy, food is good and reasonable priced too.

I had dinner there for the first time.
It was really a surprise! Very good quality meat with the right flavour and cooked to the point.
I had “Ossos da suã” to start with ( a must, the very best I had in years), and after a “Cabidela “.
Desert, “rabanada” and Pumpkin jam with “Serra” cheese fantastic!
For two with house wine and scotch at the end 30 plus Euros.

O Principe is the only restaurant in town that is known as a "Marisqueira" or a Seafood Restaurant, They serve all sorts of seafood and you can order them in large platters as is the custom also in Galicia, Spain. They do serve fish and meat as well, which is convenient case you go with some friends that cannot eat seafood. They have take away as well.
Ambiance: very simple, popular and very noisy at lunch and dinner both. Service is quick and efficient. Plating does not seem to be a concern. Food quality: I have been to several seafood restaurants in Galicia and Portugal (Porto, Algarve, etc) so in comparison the quality at O Principe is average. nothing to really write home about. However, it is the only Marisqueira we have in Chaves! And it is also a Beer bar (Cervejaria) and Grill. Prices in general are above average ( a bit on the expensive side if you order the star dishes: Seafood Platter, Crab or Lobster,

An excellent service! The owner let us taste octopus to prove it is really delicious if the cook knows what he or she is doing ! He was right! It was also a nice restaurant for kids. You must try it!

A typical Portuguese atmosphere of the sort that are becoming rare with time.
Warm, friendly and obliging stuff offers fast and efficient service. The owner/chef keeps walking around tables collecting opinions and remarks displaying honest care and diligence.
House red wine very good. Endless parade of starter plates all exquisitely prepared and suitable for vegetarian, fish and meat eaters . Main course that follows can be of meat, fish or other speciality of the day. Customers are consulted sufficiently but the provision of the plates seems to be at the discretion of the chef who ensures through adequate interaction that no one is left unsatisfied. There is no menu. There are no prices. At the end you pay what you deem to be a fair fare! Indeed!
The meal is complete with assortments of home made Deserts and surprise guitar and song play by the resourceful chef and friends... aaa and to help digestion excellent Portuguese cherry eaux de vie! A memorable experience not to be missed!!!

This place has a great location right in the middle of the square with a great view of the castle but it failed to deliver a good meal. We all opted for the Sugestao do Chef and only after our order was taken and drinks brought to us did the waiter tell us there were only 3 left, and we had ordered 4. He then asked what the 4th person would like (which was the couscous) but left us with the impression that the remainder of the meal would be part of the Sugestao. Not so. We were charged full price for the couscous (9.45 euro for the picture attached!) plus the soup starter and the coffee.
Really disappointing and a complete rip off!
