It is a mystery why this restaurant, run by the HP tourism development board is so recommended. It does have good views, but the staff were quite slow and unhelpful.
Apart from a few dishes marked as Himalchali the rest is fairly standard North Indian restaurant fayre, with the usual extra pizza, chips and Chinese foods thrown in. We visited mid afternoon and after a lengthy wait both for menus and then for our order to be taken were then told the kitchen was closed and that only a few Chinese foods were offered.
The Chinese food provided was less than impressive - gloopy sticky sauce drowning the noodles in the chowmein and bland for fried rice.
Perhaps Tourism boards should stick to tourism and restaurant professionals to selling food?

The sweets at Baljee's are tasty. The most important advantage is its location. It is very close to the Scandal Point at the Mall, and, is therefore very accessible. One can quickly grab a snack and enjoy it while roaming. As far as pricing is concerned, some things are overpriced.

Cafe sol is the ultimate place for having some snacks. All dishes are so yummy and mouth watering. Will visit again soon.

This is the only restaurant inside the Oberoi Cecil and this is where you get breakfast if you are staying there. It has a nice antique Victorian ballroom feel to it. Service is exceptional (ready my Oberoi Cecil review) and the staff super attentive and helpful. They are willing to customize just about everything as per your choice and even make food not listed on the menu. Give a shout out to Chef Raj Kumar and he will be more than willing to help. Breakfast spread is good with a lot of vegetarian options and fair spread of eggless bakery items. We tried their risotto, paneer and dal makhani. Everything was delightful but the naans were a bit stretchy. Prices are expensive but then this is a 5 star that lives up to its name so totally worth paying for it. Dinner for 2 will set you back 4-5K at least if you go for 2-3 courses.

This coffee house is located at the end entrance of the Mall Road and is one of the oldest in the city
It still holds the posters of the 70’s about having coffee . It offers coffee and South Indian tiffin and snacks . If you are looking for South Indian tiffin , go to this place . The chairs were pretty old .

Cozy cafe with freshly cooked food, high quality ingredients, great ambiance. Right in the middle of the mall near the Red Fire Trucks. Look up for the blue building with yellow windows :)
The service was really good, crepes delicious and free wifi. It wasn't the least expensive place we had eaten in but was nice to have something other than Indian food.

Chail Palace Resturant is the best in Chail. Since it is a remove hill station, getting continental and north indian food is a challange. But with Chail Palace, its a dream come true.
It's not a very big palace rather it's a normal building but it offered mesmerizing views and you can walk in the clouds during rainy season.
It got popular because of '3 Idiots' movie(house of Ranchod Das Chanchad).
Food was tasty and it offers drinks too.
Ambiance was not that great but due to weather I loved this place.

Small open bakery on the mall , Shimla.
This is an old shop located bang on the mall road. We got a truffle packed for a late night bite. The truffle turned out to be completely disastrous. Not sure if it is worth stopping by

Located at the prime location at the mall road at Shimla, Sagar Ratna offers a variety of food in North Indian, South Indian & Chinese cuisines. Guests can enjoy comfortable dining with mall road view. Open all days at your service, the restaurant serves hot and delicious food at all times.
Being vegetarian we visited here and find the service and food nice. although it is not that great but still it is fine.
