Cat Island is simply ameowzing. Really, all puns aside. Legend has it that magical creatures inhabit the underground caverns of Mermaid Hole, and the ruins of Deveaux Mansion and Armbrister Plantation are breathtaking. A hike up to the Hermitage stone monastery on Mount Alvernia, the highest point in the Bahamas, will reward you with panoramic views. A guided tour of the island’s diverse creek systems is a must for nature lovers.

Da Smoke Pot is fine. The food is decent, the atmosphere is good and the music is fun. But this place is not worthy of near legendary status. The meal was no better than anything else I've had on the island. The atmosphere is laid back and quirky, but the entire island has those characteristics. For my money, I prefer other places. Go to Hidden Treasures, better food, right on the water, and Cat Island quirky/charming. Da Smoke Pot is fine and if you're on the island for any period of time it's certainly a consideration, but you can do better.

With killer views of the ocean, set up high on the hillside, 100 or so steps up from the gorgeous beach, or if driving, up a sandy, bumpy road, you are sure to have a delicious meal, whatever you choose, at Shannas. Beautifully landscaped grounds with colourful flowers everywhere, clean clean clean inside and out, the restaurant has windows in 3 directions. Decorated with beachy accessories, furnished with beautiful wood tables and chairs - you can tell a lot of thought, hard work and dollars have gone into establishing this as a gem of Cat Island. Love their glassware and dishes too!
Lucky for us, Shannas was open during our visit Nov 2017, as it was closed our first visit, Feb 2017. We finally got to meet the welcoming Gabby and her infamous sidekick, Frank, be attended by their friendly staff, drink the most delicious pina colada ever, sink our teeth into a hearty pizza (warned it would take 30 minutes - who cares? we've got lots of time! ~ $40 including 2 drinks, tax + tip) and then experience one of their 3 course dinners (includes appetizer, main course and dessert, ~ $150, 2 drinks, dinner, coffee, tax + tip).
Call ahead for dinner Reservations, the menu changes every day, and take a flashlight if going for dinner, you'll need one for the walk to/from beachside, or when you get out of your car, the darkness will astound you!

Yardie was off the island, so her husband Derrick was in. Wife and I had beers and drinks late afternoon on return drive from going up and down the one highway sightseeing (having read the reviews) and Derrick pulled up a chair and a Kalik and chatted like we were old friends. After a bit we were!
Returned that evening with teens and all had dinner. Must say Derrick made best hamburgers we had on whole trip to Cat Island. Ribs that fall off the bone and conch fritters the way God intended!
Come to think of it, best restaurant for the money on the island - on a card table in the fresh air under the awning with real people dropping in and cold Kaliks and good rum and conch and friendly people!

Owner is Mrs. Doris Johnson-Farah (242) 342-2159
This was one of those lazy days wandering about on the island, when we suddenly realized how hungry we were and had no idea what to do about it, but then there it was, next to the sea, in New Bight: Grammy Farah's.
Grammy said, yes, she had food but apologized for the selection. She said she only had barbecued chicken and red snapper. She told us that being Holy Week she had not made rice, because her daughter wanted to fit into her Easter dress. She said she did have french fries and didn't see what difference rice or fries made, since they were both fattening!
So in the pretty room, cooled by the sea breeze from the hot sun we sat down to beer, and the above mentioned choices. Wow, was the food good. She warned me that it was whole fish, with the head and tail, and I assured her that was the only way to eat red snapper as long as she brought me some hot sauce and lime. She told me she loved to suck the fish head, as do I.
The fish and chicken were great. Hey, the fries were great too. She looked at the fish remains and let me know that I did an ok job of finishing the head, not as good as she does, but pretty good.
This place was warm, friendly, inviting and Grammy is fun to talk with. Oh, and the food is so good.

Don't skip Sammy T's. Though not very busy, the food is still good and the service friendly. Order grouper fingers or cracked conch, relax with a Kalik or Sands, and enjoy.

Right across the street from the New Bight International Airport, this place gets the extened lunch "crowd" from airport and Sky Bahamas personnel, airport customers, and locals. From the look of the sound system it gets a lot of action at night too.
As for food, this place appears to be always open when you need them with daily specials. Instead of peas and rice, they offered crab and rice as an accompaniment to the usual Bahamian fare. Everything was really good.
Service: The waitress/barmaid/cook/you name it person was definitely getting tired of it all and it showed. People told me she was always grumpy. However, this did not stop anyone, including us, from enjoying ourselves!

Spoke with some guests at our resort and they raved about the two sisters who cook at the Blue Bird. We stopped by for lunch and welcomed with open arms. The best fish and chicken ever had. My daughter actually ate the whole thing without a single complaint. Fish straight from the ocean, scales and all. It was delicious.

Totally unexpected fun night with good local food and extraordinary island music with a contagious beat. Don't expect Carnegy Hall, but then you can go in shorts and sandals!

Mermaid's Restaurant offers excellent Greek cuisine which is totally unexpected on Cat Island. I had the chicken souvlaki and Greek fries, both were delicious. Some of our friends ordered the different seafood dishes and they looked very good also. The portions are generous. We go...MoreThank you for your kind revue. We are happy that you all loved the food and look forward to seeing you again soon !

Go for the chicken wings or fried lobster. Fish is excellent but make sure the fish is grouper. You have to see the crab box. Three hundred crabs in box live next to kitchen. Very friendly place. About 45 min to get food. No problem just drink beer and get a education in Bahama world
