I asked why was the Coffee Shop called The Refugee Coffee House and the reason is very simple, the owners recognize that as they are in a town which is on Route 66 and it has many travellers from over the world, they wanted to provide a place for these travellers to feel free and comfortable to stop off, have a coffee and some food, take a rest and savor the atmosphere of this lovely Illinois town,
The inside of the building is very nicely decorated with many slogans and sayings which are thought provoking. Service was very friendly. Coffee was good. We had sandwich which although somewhat rustic was really nice.
This Coffee Shop has a number of seats outside and it was great to sit there and watch the world go by, with lots of passing traffic in this busy square.
Well done to the residents of Carlinville for taking the initiative to have this coffee shop and indeed there are a number of very good souvenir and antique shops in the vicinity of the coffee shop worth visiting.
Stop off in Carlinville, have a coffee, and relax in the square which taking a rest on your journey.

Small town Dairy Queen. Usual yummy menu. Friendly wait staff. Nothing beats a vanilla DQ cone! Highly recommended for a meal or just a sweet treat.

In 1993 the Illinois state legislative named Springfield "the Chilli Capital of the Civilized World" because of its numerous great chilli establishments but no "chilli" in Springfield compares to Taylor's. I have been eating Taylor's Chili for over 60 years and took cans of it to college with me and when serving in the Army. My cousin's mother sent it to him when he was stationed in Korea. I always have the chili but others in the family enjoy the butterbean and vegetable soups. The menu has expanded over the years to include tacos, taco salad, nachos, hot dogs, chili dogs, chili cheese dogs, and chili mac. I eat at the parlor whenever I am in Carlinville but otherwise fill my craving by having a can of chili every Monday. The restaurant recently moved from the NE corner to the NW corner of the Carlinville. The new location is larger and more comfortable. The service is always prompt and friendly. Love it!.

We stopped here for lunch after circling the quaint, well kept town square on historic Route 66 in Carlinville. Though there were several choices that looked very appealing, we decided pizza would be nice.
The small restaurant in an old building has a fun series of frescos including a Ferrari on the wall and a reproduction of The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo on the ceiling. Someone clearly had fun decorating & painting.
The service was prompt & friendly & the pizza & pasta on the buffet were good. The pizza was all thin and crispy with sufficient but not overdone toppings & there was a nice variety of choices. The salad bar while small was good & fresh.
This was a good choice for a quick lunch on the road, & if you have time for a little shopping (we didn't), it would probably be fun to check out the stores on the square.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful evening with friends at this unique little restaurant on the beautiful Carlinville square. Not only was our food exceptional, but the atmosphere was unique. The exposed brick, wood ceilings beams, and interesting artwork all added to the experience. The stuffed burger I enjoyed was huge and very tasty. My husband ranted about the rib eye steak. The staff was friendly and helpful also. A bonus for the gals was the cute little boutique we walked through on the way to and from the restaurant...shopping and dining! Will definitely return!

Sandwich style menu with great selection. The grilled portabella mushroom sandwich is a favorite. Also like the rib eye, grilled chicken. Enjoy the atmosphere and the service is great.

We ordered take out for dinner and found the young lady inside to be quite helpful and nice. The prices were very reasonable as well. Opting for the catfish fritter dinner I was pleasantly surprised that the fish was not greasy at all, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside! Fries were good and pulled pork was delicious too! Also, my side salad was made with crisp and crunchy fresh lettuce & onion. Dinner for two around $16 was totally worth it - We will be going back and recommending it to our friends!

I have been eating Taylor's chilli and butterbean (with) since 1970 at every location they have been at in Carlinville. I usually order to go AND have a bowl of chilli while I am waiting. It has been consistently good all those years!! Try their chilli mac and taco salad as well - both are wonderful

Visited with family after the shut down and reopening. The food tastes so much better now and the service is better as well. The fajitas are always my favorite and the chips and salsa are delicious. I hope it stays this way!
