This Italian-speaking region in Southern Switzerland is on the border with Italy. Bellinzona is the capital, and Lugano is the most important city in the canton, known for its beautiful waterfront, steep hillsides and gorgeous lake views. Castelgrande is a lovely medieval castle overlooking the city that has recently been restored. The Centovalli Railway is a scenic train that operates between Locarno, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, traveling through the breathtaking "Hundred Valleys." Lake Como is nearby, the home of People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” George Clooney.

Le bucca di Gandria, is a sweet family run Italian restaurant and b&b. The owner was so helpful and helped me for a wedding we were attending, by going out of her way and bringing me a steam iron. The room is clean with stunning views of the lake and we enjoyed sitting on the balcony. Shared toilet was clean and the communal kitchen had plenty of supplies of tea and coffee and snacks. The restaurant is not your typical Italian but with refined food. A great find and very quaint!

To call this charming bed and breakfast a hillside pensione with a great view is to understate the facts. First, the hill is more like a cliff. Second, the pensione itself, ever so well maintained and appointed by its able innkeeper, Andrea, is beyond charming. The rooms are clean and elegant, and the entire establishment has a flare that is both intimate and lovely. Third, the “great view” is better described as stunning, and it is surrounded by elements of class and style. Andrea’s breakfast terrace looks down some 500 vertical feet onto the aqua colors of Lago Maggiore below, and across the lake are dark green hills that jump from the opposite shore. The terrace is topped with a shady grape arbor. When we visited at the end of August, it was bursting with delicious Concord grapes. Then, as if to gild the lily, the view from the terrace is framed by tall palm trees that stand like pillars set in Andrea’s tiered garden below. Yes, the word “charming” does not do it justice. Beyond the view, we found Andrea and her staff friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. As to the only possible down-side of its location – the fact that you have to go uphill to get there – do not be daunted. Although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend the climb up the steep stairs from Locarno’s old city up to the pensione – “only a kilometer’s walk” up the hill – except for those who are fit and able, and although I definitely would not attempt it with luggage, yet do not lose heart. For those trying to trim costs, the pensione sits right at a bus stop. Locarno’s efficient buses will carry you directly there or back to town, and a special card given to you when you check into the pensione means you can take the bus for free within the city core. If a bus is not handy when headed uphill, a taxi from the city center will land you at the pensione in a matter of minutes. If you have a car, then you have no worries, but you will want to get used to narrow winding roads with lots of hairpin turns. The last possible option to get up the hill without climbing steps is to take the funicular railway. Although it might seem charming at first, it is not as convenient as a bus or a taxi. It is still a 10 minute walk between the uphill funicular station and the pensione, and the funicular’s schedule is nowhere as convenient as the bus. In short, we highly recommend this lovely spot. My only regret is we did not spend longer there!

Hotel Gabbani, a unique Design Hotel in the heart of old town Lugano, opened its doors for the first time in 2012. A symbiosis between culinary and architecture is reflected in its geometry, spaciousness and furnishings, creating a tranquil, yet invigorating atmosphere. Domenico and Francesco Gabbani developed the concept for the hotel together with the Ticinese architect Sven Panzera , drawing inspiration from the colours and contours of fine food and drink. Here the present meets the past, with hotel rooms surrounding a medieval courtyard containing beautiful open arcades, part of the former convent. The central patio that hosts our fine food shops and bar on the ground floor has a delicatessen offering a wide range of specialities as well as a restaurant for gourmet delights on the first and ground floor. A fine buffet breakfast is served on the first floor, with delicious products from Ticino, with sausages, cheese, fruit and oven-fresh bread and croissants.
Located at the center of city with coffees and shops, 2-3 Min. from promenade with artistic design, very friendly, helpful and professional staff. Bedrooms are not large but very nice and clean. The breakfast was 20. Sfr. per person and the parking 25.Sfr. per day at near by garage. Highly recommended.

The views down over the lake are breathtaking. The ice cream on the terrace was delicious. The swimming pool is great. The room was large and clean. Dinner was very enjoyable and the staff were welcoming and friendly. I would highly recommend a stay here. The different heights of the steps can catch you out - be careful.

We liked the jazz theme and the interior of the Jazz Hotel, it is modern but not overdone or stuffy. The hotel was renovated a few years ago and is maintained well. Common areas and rooms are clean. Hotel is by the side of the one-way street leading into Ascona city center, so there is some road noise but it dies down in the evening and didn't bother us much despite having the balcony door open. Location is great, only a 5 minute walk to the lake. Breakfast is good quality and sufficient, but not elaborate. Freely available espresso/cappuccino machine in the lobby is a nice touch, along with lots of local information and magazines. Parking structure under the hotel is very convenient, although parking has a small extra charge. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, we had a very good stay and plan to come back. This is a great mid-budget option on the Swiss side of Lago Maggiore,

We stayed three nights at Al Battello. The rooms are located above the restaurant and are accessed down a side alley so it felt much more like a restaurant with rooms rather than a formal hotel. Our room looked directly out over the boat landing stage so we could watch the comings and goings. It was nice to have a double mattress (which appears to be a rare thing in Switzerland!!) with plenty of hanging space for clothes. The room was clean and good value. Breakfast was an additional cost of CHF 15 per person per day and was served to our table "under the arches". Simple (croissant, bread, jams, cheese, meat, juice and coffee) but satisfying.

We stayed three nights in Garni Nessi hotel. They gave us a bed for our baby for free. The room was quite big and the bathroom had a tube. The owner always made sure that we had a parking place. Very friendly staff. The city center can be reached in 10 min by foot from the hotel. There is also a swimming pool. We would be happy to come back to this hotel. Thank you very much for everything!
