Of the 5 restaurants in downtown Hayward serving Japanese food, Wakamatsu is my favorite. It is a mom & pop shop where Joey, the sushi chef, greets you as you enter and Emiko takes your order. My favorite lunch is the Sushi Lunch Special (CA roll with sushi) and red bean ice cream. The restaurant is popular with Japanese students attending CSUEB. I also love the fried oysters - they use a tempura batter. Not only is the food very good, but the price is very reasonable.

Had early Saturday lunch here. Only had sashimi, karage, and 2 beverage. Perhaps we lucked out. The omakase sashimi was 14 pieces of good sized fish and all tender. And only $18! That is unusually good value. The karage was average. Service was fast and efficient but this was before noon.

We like to go on Saturdays as cheaper than Sunday. Good selection of sushi and chinese dishes. Lots of window seating and natural lighting which we prefer. It can be bit crowded at buffet aisle. There are very good at replenishing hot tea. Nice coquilles St. Jacques scallops.

I was staying in Hayward for two nights and felt like sushi. So I checked on a number of websites and this place came up as highly recommended on a number of reviews. From the outside it looks rather inconspicuous and nondescript. It is a rather small restaurant, which was rather crowded when I was there. Fortunately I found one spot left at the bar and enjoyed one of the best sushi meals ever for a very fair price. Regulars most probably do hate me now for posting this online as I would want to keep this secret if it was on my doorstep. However, the food is simply too good for not being enjoyed by sushi lovers around the globe.

Katsu Restaurant is a small spot tucked away in a strip mall adjacent to Lucky Store and Doug's Restaurant. The ambiance is cozy and quiet. The seafood is fresh and well-prepared, and the menu has ample choices. The rolls and dinner portions are not the biggest I've had, but they are tasty. Prices are about average for the area - maybe a little less than other spots around CV village.

I can't remember the last time I went to a Japanese restaurant. After living in Castro Valley for 35 years I was starting to believe there would never be a truly exceptional dining spot in this area, but I was wrong. Friends told us how much they enjoy going to Koyomi, so last night we decided to give it a try. Not only was every course fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented, but the service was excellent. We had four courses and walked out full for only $39.00. I plan to return ASAP. This is a winner.

On my birthday, my husband took me here for the prix fix omakase dinner. It was unforgettable! The entire meal was an experience. We tried some things that were more familiar, and had other dishes unique to their restaurant. The ingredients are incredible fresh and very thoughtful. We have returned several since then, and ordered from the regular menu. It's a bit pricy but you get what you pay for.

We were a large group that had a buffet dinner in one of the private rooms. It is an interesting place with exotic interior and with a beautiful front door. The various dishes were very tasty. But I was most impressed with the servers. They were refilling our water glasses constantly, the servers were efficient and our drink ordered were quickly brought to the table. They were helpful and friendly. They worked very hard to please everybody. Good job! I plan to return and try some of the dishes on the menu.
