It was January 2nd. We had to go to the nearby Costco, so we decided to check out Bar Louie. It opened exactly 30 days earlier on December 2nd, making our visit it's one-month anniversary.Admittedly, January 2nd (on a Tuesday) is a pretty dead night. But from the outside, looking in, it was clear that the place almost completely empty. There were maybe 8 people at an elongated oval wrap around bar that could probably seat 50. And there appear to be about 50 tables (a mix of bar/pub height and traditional dining tables in addition to a "fishbowl" private room that could probably be used for general guests that would seat another 50-60 people. There was also a patio with about 15 tables. There were a total including us of about 10 parties at all tables. It is worth noting there was also a table of Bar Louie staff (I assume they were off work) with about 6 people seated and various staff going back and forth and standing and socializing during (the ample) slow time. On arrival we were told we could sit anywhere we wanted so we took a bar height table near the bar.I must admit the bar was well staffed. There were easily 7 dedicated bar staff along with about a dozen floor staff. I should really say 11 floor staff because one of the servers (an attractive, 20 something woman) was stationed exclusively at a bar top table talking (flirting) with a gentleman in his mid-50's from before we were seated until after we left. And I mean she literally never left the table (though she was standing, not seated). It was a little creepy....Overall the decor/ambiance was pretty formulaic, and I could have been at any of dozens of other wannabe-upscale chain-bars trying to compete with upscale, non-chain places. It was as good or better than any of them, yet it still left me feeling like I was at a millenialized TGI Fridays. The menu was pretty much exactly what you would expect, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers and a few main courses. My wife ordered a glass of white wine and I ordered a Manhattan. Both drinks were served promptly. And both were fine. My only issue with the Manhattan is that they garnished with Maraschino cherries versus Luxardo (or another cherry), which would be more suitable for a craft cocktail. Maraschino cherries are what I put on my kids' sundaes. I expected more from an $11 cocktail. Far a place with the word "Bar" in their name, I was expecting a more sophisticated, craft cocktail experience. But reviewing the drink list and looking at the bottles at the bar told me this place is probably very carefully curated by their liquor suppliers and there is no decision making by a "head bartender" or "mixologist" on what liquors are stocked. Everything that I could see on the bar was picked with profit in mind. Their beer selection was completely adequate for a chain. But they didn't even have any special beers available and there was really no craft beer at all.We ordered the Chips and dips (I forget the menu name). It included tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole, and "queso" (I am putting "" around queso because it was not queso and was more or less, nacho cheese sauce, just a little thicker and warmer than what you would get at 7/11). There wasn't anything wrong with the appetizer. It was just very basic. For main course we ordered their special bourbon burger to split, where the bourbon sauce, it seems, is still full strength (as the burger is only available to guests 21 years and older). It was served with fries. I thought the burger was fine. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing remarkable. I was disappointed that the fries were not piping hot. They weren't soggy or bad. But they were 3 minutes from being soggy. The overall service was good. Our server was prompt and attentive. But she should have been since we were her only table. Other people checked in on us a couple of times too. But again, the place was almost empty. The real test of service would be a night where most of the tables are seated, the bar is full and there is a wait to be seated. The emptiness and our view of the bar area allowed us to observe staff quite a bit. One thing we kept noticing was the bartender at the service bar. She kept playing with her hair, twirling it and running her hands through it, not something you want to see from the person making your drink (or cooking or serving food). We also noticed her wipe her runny nose with her hand about a half dozen times. In addition, there was a lot of socialization and goofing around. Overall, this is not a place I would ever pick as a destination. But if I had 30 minutes for a drink and appetizer before a movie (at the nearby theater), MAYBE I would pick this place. However, given the track record of this complex, I don't expect this place to be open more than a year.Russel, while it's awesome to hear that your service was prompt and attentive, and that you enjoyed your burger, it is a disappointment to hear that you didn't fully enjoy your time here. We appreciate your feedback, and hope you'll consider us in the future.

I got flashbacks to college where you get comfort food in kind of a dive atmosphere. Good selection of beer and food. There are high tables that can accommodate larger groups. Perfect for the hockey and soccer fans who they seem to cater to on game days. It's dark, old sticky tables and the service is "different". It's like when you walk into someone's home and make yourself at home. You can make things move along better if you go get your own menu, take your glass to the bar to get another beer, and go get and pay your check at the counter. They're very nice and friendly though. It can be packed with young people on weekends and certain game days. Big party spot.

Kettle Bar

After being told about this place, I was not sure what to expect. My husband eats there at least twice a week when away on business. If you choose to sit at the "kettle bar" you are strategically placed in front of the kettles where you are given an amazing show from the friendly and talented staff. If you choose the soup, it is like nothing you have ever had before. The portions are huge but you will find you just can't stop eating. Chris and Nathen are kettle kings!

Went to American Grub for the first time on our way to an early evening movie. Got there at Happy Hour, 20% off draft beer and appetizers. We ordered a plate of Buffalo Wings, which were just perfect. A hamburger each and one plate of fries was plenty for two. We left super satisfied and will definitely make it one of our regular stops.

Great little spot - usually quite unless there is a large group at the bar, if so sit outside.A must is the appetizer, Green Beans! We also enjoy their burgers. The meat tastes like a real burger should. Not sure if they grind the meat on the premises, but it tastes like they do.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

Reviewed By BruinDan

Hopdoddy is a chain of over 20 gourmet burger restaurants located throughout the western United States (currently Arizona, California, Tennessee and Texas). The Tustin unit is off El Camino Real in the Tustin Marketplace, ironically adjacent to an In-N-Out Burger. According to their website, they “have a passion to bring you burgers made with fresh, all-natural ingredients prepared by hand.”The Tustin Marketplace is a sprawling shopping center, so parking is plentiful and free. The dining room has a hip, contemporary design, with a bar located in the middle of the dining area. The service system here is interesting – when you enter, grab a menu to peruse as you wait in line while you make your way to the order counter up front. Once you place your food and drink orders someone will assign you a table for your party. The menu features many interesting burger possibilities, but there are numerous salad options as well.My son ordered the Primetime burger (with Akaushi beef, brie cheese, arugula, caramelized onions, truffle aioli, steak sauce, beefsteak tomato), while I opted for the Magic Shroom burger (with Angus beef, Texas goat cheese, field mushrooms, mayo, basil pesto, red leaf lettuce, white onion, beefsteak tomato). We also had side orders of their Kennebec fries and Parmesan truffle fries. The Parmesan truffle fries were amazing on their own, but I thought the Kennebec fries were a better complement to the burgers. We definitely relished our meals; the meat was cooked to our requested doneness and extremely flavorful, and the burgers were well crafted and balanced. They’re not cheap – certainly a good deal more expensive than the nearby In-N-Out – but the prices are in line what you’d expect to pay for an upscale burger. We enjoyed dining at Hopdoddy and would certainly look forward to a return visit.
