Under new ownership

Dawson's has been a staple in downtown Dixon for decades. Always a bit on the dive side, they serve up the best breakfast in the county. After undergoing new ownership and a renovation, the food is still good (and a good value), and the place is a little classier. I love the bacon and the biscuits and gravy are very yummy and taste homemade. The only drawback is when it is really busy, service can be a little slow.I always try to plan my trips to Sacramento to be early in the day so I can get my Dawson's fix.

My Buddy at work ate here a decade or so a go before they remodeled and suggested I stop here on my road trip, glad I did. The Biscuits and Gravy were amazing, not to thick gravy and light biscuits, wish I got the big order, service so so, had a hard time getting coffee refills but when you are in a small town........

Cattlemen's

I'm what I like to call a true foodie, which means I don't care if it's white tablecloth dining or a street cart with questionable sanitary practices, I'll eat it all. And Cattlemens is one of my very favorite down-home restaurants of all time. I literally stop here every time I visit the Napa Valley for a wine country getaway because it's on the way between the Sacramento airport and Napa proper. You absolutely need to call ahead or go on their website to make reservations. This place is hopping every night of the week because they run daily specials in the bar and dining room. Check the latest promotions online before you go. If you are celebrating a special occasion, let them know. They'll put your name on the chalkboard at the entrance. The atmosphere is cowboy casual, with cheesy Western decor and a mix of tables and booths. I find the booths very cramped and uncomfortable; the tables are actually better here. This place is an outstanding value, as most entrees come with ranch beans, all you can eat salad, and warm sourdough bread. All are really good, and they'll give you as many refills as you want. The portion sizes are very large, even the appetizers. Don't order a starter unless you are super hungry. We are big eaters and always regret getting an appetizer when we go.I always order the exact same thing because it's so good (why mess with perfection)? I get "The Chopper," a pound of freshly ground sirloin that's loaded with cheeses, bacon, and sautéed mushrooms. I like the vegetables as a side to save on carbs, but their potatoes (in all varieties) are super tasty. I also have been known to polish off an entire basket of sourdough bread by myself, so it evens out.Hubby, who is a huge meat lover, doesn't like this place. Go figure. He has tried different steaks and burgers, but is never that happy with what he orders. "Why don't you like it, I don't understand?!" I always ask. His response: "Everything here tastes too 'beefy.'"I just don't get it!He has started to enjoy the prime rib, though. Guess that's not too 'beefy.'If you want a casual atmosphere, gigantic portions, good prices, and great service, Cattlemens is your place. I love it!
