We visited on a Thursday night with a friend who lives in Orinda and were pleased with the food here. We ordered mostly Sushi and the Sushi was fresh and tasty,. Seaweed Salad was good, Loved the squid skewers and cooked Scallops. Gindara, Hanachi, Albacore, Unagi, and king salmon sushi were all tasty. Good place and busy.

Sumo Sushi the evening we visited was almost half full and the majority of the patron were Japanese, a very good sign. There were families as well as couples and even a group of friends eating. the décor has plastic cherry blossom branches and flowers in areas of the ceiling as if you are sitting under the trees. there is a partial wall mural of Mt. Fuji. Not hardcore Japanese style but is pleasant to the eye. The wait staff is kept busy but is efficient. we had a dinner Bento box with (one) tempura shrimp plus veggies, chicken teriyaki (cut in thinner strips than I have generally experienced) and gyoza. the chicken teriyaki had a very nice flavor, almost a smokiness to it, if you like potstickers crispy bottomed you will find the ones hear too mushy, the same goes for the filling that appears, to me, to be a mystery. personally I like any meat filling for gyoza/potstickers to be more chunky and, of course, the wrapping to be crispy on the bottom. we also ordered a Dragon Roll and Golden Gate Roll and both were excellent. Because Sumo Sushi offers so many sashimi or sushi rolls this is a big reason to return. Some neighboring tables had sashimi and they looked delicious; nice thick pieces of firm fresh fish. In our area there are a number of Japanese restaurants but I would not hesitate to visit Sumo Sushi again.

Chikara, the sushi 'chef' at Sugata, always has something special to recommend; he is especially great with his recommendations, once, he gets to know your tastes for fish. The food at Sugata has a very, very authentic flavor; it very much, reminds me of food, prepared by my relatives; it's almost if they had the same recipes and preparation style.
