This is a very friendly, family owned Japanese restaurant. Everything we tried was excellent and served with a beautiful presentation. We had garlic edamame, crunchy sushi, salmon in a very tasty sauce, and their desert specialty of fried peanut butter and jelly with vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries. The location is in an industrial area but clean, intimate, and excellent service.

I must be a bit bias, having lived in Japan for many years, but the food was a let down for me. The portions are huge, but something is missing in the flavor. I ordered the Fried Seafood mix and noticed that the batter was all flour, kinda hard, thick and the shrimp was so small. It was cut in half lengthwise instead of preparing the whole shrimp. My wife ordered the tempura and had similar complaints. Service was excellent, so no complains in that department. The place was packed, so Hanaoka is a very popular restaurant.

Nobu, located in the Hard Rock Hotel of all places, seems a bit out of place. What is a high-end, classy Japanese restaurant doing in the Hard Rock? In any event, having dined at some of its sister restaurants, we opted for the Tanoshi Hour on a summer Friday.Tanoshi Hour has its own menu of small bites. We chose the yellowtail sashimi, pork yakiniku and black cod. All were stellar, but at $4.50 per bite on a happy hour priced menu, they should be. Washed it down with an Asahi draft ($7 for a tall, but thin, stein - probably no more than 10 oz.).Overall, quality was very high, as was the price.
