I've wondered about this location for the two decades I've been coming to Cayucos. From the outside, it looks like your common uninspired neighborhood Italian restaurant if you live in a not-particularly-authentic Italian neighborhood. (I know a little about Italian food because my mother worked in an Italian restaurant and I've lived in Boston's North End and a stone's throw from San Francisco's North Beach.) On this trip, I was in for a pleasant surprise. My companions' lasagne Bolognese and pasta del mare were very good. Two of us shared a half-salad, with a delicious, light, nicely seasoned balsamic-vinegar-and-oil dressing. I don't eat meat, so the real stand-out for me was the vegetable lasagneâa delightful rendition of this dish featuring a mushroom ragout. We brought a bottle of wine, paying a reasonable $15 corkage fee, and ordered one more glass of the good house wine for $7. (The wine list is fairly impressive, with California wines well represented.) We didn't have room for dessert. The bill for the three of us came to less than $100. Friendly service, casual atmosphere. Don't wait as long as I did to give this place a try.

Martin's is on the main thoroughfare but down the road a bit, so maybe doesn't get noticed right away. It says Italian and Mexican food but seemed to be exclusively Mexican dishes. But, boy, were they delicious! I had a chicken taco and beef tamale and the food just tasted so fresh. It was hot temperature-wise and just the right spiciness for me, an admitted sissy. In our group was also orders for taquitos, a chimichanga, a burrito, and a quesadilla. Everybody was very happy with their choices. The service was friendly and attentive, with quick refills, warnings of hot plates, and plenty of free fresh, crispy chips and salsa. Prices were reasonable and the restaurant seemed quite clean. I definitely recommend this place.
I have eaten here several times and the service and food are consistently excellent. As a single woman eating alone (with a good book), it's important to me to be well looked after, and they always do that. The eggplant parmigiana is wonderful.... better than my own! It can be a bit loud and crowded at peak times, so just go early or late if you want a bit more peace and quiet.
