Malibu Farm Pier Cafe serves fresh and simple dishes with a lovely Californian vibe. The service is as sunny as the weather and the setting is memorable. My only serious quibble with this establishment is that you have to use a car park which charges $15. I don’t live in California so perhaps I shouldn’t be shocked by this but, I am!

Urth Caffe

If you think you're the first to discover the newly hip, downtown warehouse district scene, think again. This quasi-healthy restaurant often has lines snaking out the door, it's so popular. And yes, with enough self-discipline, you can eat an extremely healthy meal here: salads and vegan options abound. But most people fall victim to their unforgivably-sinful dessert options, baked on the premises. You think it matters that the coffee in your caffe latte is organic when the other ninety percent of it is pure, inorganic butterfat? Oh, please. No matter, Urth Caffe is an Arts District staple, and while you may not come away any closer to spiritual enlightenment, you definitely won't come away hungry or disappointed. Parking, if you are as valet-phobic as I am, can be a problem. But after that apple tart that is no less deadly because it's made with .001% whole wheat, a walk of a few blocks would probably do you good. The neighborhood is safe, in spite of appearances; in fact, it's part of the allure. Go for it!

Wonderful little place for breakfast if you want to avoid the generic overpriced universal offerings. So glad we stopped, delicious pancakes and other breakfast offerings. We were worried being so close to universal (about a mile) that we might struggle to get an Uber/lyft for the last little bit - we needed have, got a ride in two minutes.Full of locals and a couple of local cops - always eat where the local cops do, sure sign of good things!

We were staying in a local hotel so decided to take a wander down the street. We're so glad we cam across Vivian's. The food was delicious and the price was reasonable. The service was laid back but friendly. We wish we'd found the tiny café earlier in our stay.

If you're the kind of person who often scours menus, wondering what items on them will suit your special diet (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc…) then you'll be delighted at Café Gratitude, where every single thing is vegan, and in an unusual turn of events, they have to specifically labeled on the menu what ISN’T gluten-free.Throw in free underground parking in the middle of Los Angeles and you have the recipe for the place that you should probably go and eat.I've been doing a handful of their locations all over Southern California and I've noticed their menu changes seasonally. For example at another location I had a southern-style plate which no longer is on the menu. I was looking forward to eating it, but I am always impressed by a restaurant that changes their menu with the seasons, essentially offering you a new and fresh experience every time you go.This time around, I had the Elated. (quick sidenote to mention that you have the potential to have a spiritual experience while ordering as you have the option of expressing who you are by the title of the food you choose for example, you don't just say “I'll have The elated”, you say "I am elated" and the server will know exactly what you mean and affirm your choice. Honestly sometimes I'm not really into that vibe and just want to order food and not have a forced spiritual intervention, and they don’t force it on you…but just be prepared for it if it’s not your vibe. The Elated was tempe enchiladas served under a mole sauce. This was super good and such a great treat to have a vegetarian mole sauce. Our table also shared the coconut-based calamari appetizer. These are deep-fried and really tasty as well with a good and unique sauce. I've never had real calamari as I've been a vegetarian for so long, but this didn't taste like I was just eating flavored coconut. I really liked it.Our 10-year-old was a bit hesitant about the whole menu as he still has a pretty simple powered, but he did love the smoky spicy but are not squash soup that he ordered.I have the rose sangria to drink with my meal. It was delicious with grapefruit, rose wine, sage and agave. It was refreshing and not too sweet and very lovely. We were there for a birthday celebration so it was unfortunate that they were out of most of their cake desserts, but we did have the raw “Almond Joy” bar which was good.My wife, the birthday girl herself, enjoyed the ball and everything that she ate. In the end everyone was happy we had plenty of things to choose from and we loved the free parking. We’ll definitely be back.

Aroma Coffee & Tea

3.5 stars technically.(Warning: young adults from Central Florida in for vacation) A regular weekday at 10am and most of the tables are filled. The action spills into the sidewalk where people watching is prevalent by older men chatting and having brunch while in the back, a group of ladies cheer as they have brunch. It may be crowded, there’s so many tables with 4 different settings to choose from - be patient and you’ll find a seat easily.DINING AND DRINKINGNaturally, prices in this area are a bit higher than other cafes, but at least the quality is higher and more crafted. We had a collection of burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Nothing among the food particularly stood out, but the overall flavors were great. Portions were big too! Their coffee was a bit more so-so (we had a cold coffee and an espresso shot to taste it purely. Just okay). The good thing is, if you’re in a rush, they have a separate (much smaller) line for just ordering pastries and coffee.SIDE NOTESDespite seeing many laptops, I was surprised there was no wifi! Ah well, apparently everyone here planned better than me (indeed, it looks like there’s many regulars). Aroma is a community space-- if your community consists of well-to-do, relatively fit workers in the industry.

We really enjoyed our breakfast here this morning. My husband got a spinach/mushroom/feta scramble with perfectly toasted bagel, butter, excellent berry jam (tasted homemade), and potatoes he didn’t bother to eat. It was funny; the potatoes just didn’t match the quality of everything else.I had shakshuka which I thought was very nicely done, baked with a wonderful large pepper that had a wonderful texture and was hot to the perfect degree for me. Bread basket cake with butter, that seemingly homemade berry jam, a really nice olive oil with pesto for dunking the warm rolls, and also tahini to contrast with the hot pepper. All of this was perfect. There were also sliced and pickled peppers on the side.

I took a chance today eating at this vegan restaurant today. I was NOT disappointed. Since I generally cook 90% of my meals, I was skeptical about eating out. I had the "Sharing" nachos - this is what they are called on the menu. They were terrific. With respect to service, I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted so wholeheartedly at this "white" establishment. My experience at Santa Monica and Venice Beach restaurants have not always been so welcoming. It felt good to be treated with respect as a customer instead of brush off as a color. My server was Melissa and although she was busy, she was attentive. I highly recommend Cafe Gratitude. Thanks Melissa for the question of the day and the good-bye note ("You are blessed.").

Great funky breakfast with reasonable prices. Even with an Uber there and back, we saved over $40 in breakfast from eating in Santa Monica. Limited seating, order at the counter, and they bring you your items when complete. The açaí bowls, bagel and croissant sammies were excellent.
