We stayed at Thomas' Retreat back in 2013 (when the place wasn't renovated). What I remembered most is the kind people and the great location. Thomas is an excellent guide if you want to take a tour through the jungle.

The Garden Inn is beautiful, from the detail of the rooms to the immaculate garden and tasty food. The surrounding area is stunning, and all the locals are so welcoming and friendly. The Garden Inn is right by the river and it is so peaceful listening to the sounds while sleeping. We were lucky enough to see an orangutan and her baby from our balcony. We would definitely recommend the two day jungle trek. We saw seven orangutans, due to the amazing, knowledgeable and fun guides we had. We loved the jungle experience. Don't hesitate to book The Garden Inn!

Newly opened guesthouse in the middle of Bukit Lawang. Being placed on top of the river, it has the best view in town. The warm and friendly people will help you all day with everything you need. The owner of the guesthouse is half dutch/half indonesian so he can help the guests in multiple languages.
Waterstones Hotel is wonderful locations wise no comparison. All the markets near by waterstones Hotel is in the hub and easiest location over all. I like to spend my most of the time in waterstones because I feel so homely after staying here. Wishing for this pandemic to get finish so that can visit soon to my all time favourite place

Amazing location in the heart of the jungle on the river. The hosts treat you like family and go out of their way to help you. All meals were delicious. The walk from town to Back to Nature is stunning. Hosts were also more than happy to sort out any jungle treks to spot orangutans.

Indra Valley Inn is located in Bukit Lawang on the bank of the Bohorok River, only a three minute walk to the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park. It offers riverside accommodation with 2 standard rooms and 4 new deluxe rooms (with hot water showers) which just finished in April 2016 and August 2017, respectively. All rooms have a beautiful view of the jungle and the river. Indra Valley Inn also has a tasty restaurant and offers wildlife trekking so guests can experience the Sumatran Orungutan in their natural environment. The owner Obiwan is a very experienced 3rd generation trekking guide.
Dishonest river tubing package and dishonest staff. Frowsy room with minimum facilities. Money oriented and careless regarding your family safety. Absolutely not worth of your time and money. my advice: do not spend your time here.

Perfect for you who want to get away from crowded and many activities you always do. Brown Bamboo guesthouse is peaceful and the view from your room is the river. You will not hear any noisy sound but flowing water. The guesthouse has its own restaurant if you want to try Indonesian food and a tourist information center. The owner is also the leader of the Indonesian Guide Association.
Nice place with kind and helpful staff. Rooms are okay (ask for the ones facing the river, much better than the ones in the back). We had an amazing jungle trip with our guide Jasu, saw lots of cool animals and he acted respectfully towards the orangutans and the jungle (other guides didn’t) and made sure we did the same.

We stayed for 2 nights only and we wished we could have stayed longer it was so lovely! From the moment we got collected from the airport it was so simple, our driver was friendly and drove us safely to Bukit Lawang - despite Indonesia’s crazy driving! The drive was around 4 hours due to traffic. When we arrived we were walked to the hotel (as cars cannot go on the road) and welcomed with food and drink which was lovely! Jerri and his team are extremely hospitable. We arranged the jungle trek with them too and this was a great experience! There were a few tour guides with us; so we felt safe if something were to happen! The tour guides were funny and interesting and answered any questions, and were great at making sure we were all okay and stopped whenever we needed. We saw three orngutans and it was AMAZING! We did the rafting back which was sooooo fun! Our room was so cute, and very clean! I was expected it to be like bugs life as we’re in the jungle but the most we saw was a little ant haha. The food was great and cooked by our lovely chef, who caters very well for vegan / vegetarian! When we left (sadly) our flight was early morning so we had to leave at 4am, Jerri and The driver were super helpful and arranged for us to leave at that time! The drive was faster on the way back as traffic was less. Overall it really was lovely, and Jerri and his team looking after us really made us feel at ease! Thanks again ??

We booked a 2 days and one night trek where we got to go into the jungle, spent one night camping by the river and went back tubing. We saw a mother orangutan with her baby, gibbons, thomas, hornbills before crossing the river to camp. The trek was harder than we thought because Bukit Lawang was closed during the pandemic so the vegetation has grown prosperously and gotten very thick. However, Cheeky’s cru was more than capable to handle the trek and guide us. The team knew their way by heart and put our safety as first priority. They were also capable of producing elaborate dinner, breakfast and lunch, in the jungle mind you, with the bare minimum. We’re still rather in awe. We had the best of time trekking, certainly the most memorable one with lots of tales to tell in many years to come. Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys is absolutely recommended to guide you to see orangutans in their natural habitat. The hosts Sarah and Agus (and their daughter) were very friendly, only second to their dogs. Two thumbs and two big toes up

All eight of us (2 families: 4 adults, 4 teenagers) were immediately entranced when we arrived at Batu Mandi for our three night stay. What a stunning place, with the jungle on one side and the river on the other! We were welcomed by Jamila who proved to be an amazing chef and lovely hostess. We had anticipated venturing into town for at least one or two meals but we quickly realized that we wouldn't be leaving--her cooking is amazing! Her son took us on a tour of the garden, where they grow an impressive variety of fruits that Jamila transforms into the freshest juices we will ever have. The kids loved swimming in the river and playing frisbee in the expansive lawn. The rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. If we go back to Bukit Lawang, we will be staying at Batu Mandi!
