Hell's Backbone Grill

Opening for season nineteen on March 17, 2018! Blake and Jen serve fresh organic food that comes directly from their own 6.5 acre Boulder farm for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Everything we offer is handmade, even our hot sauce and jam! Our beef and lamb is grass-fed and finished and comes from a local rancher. We have children's menus available for all three meals. We're deeply committed to our farm to table ethos and to serving delicious place-based cuisine in a beautiful and casual setting. We offer a curated selection of sustainably produced wines and a full bar with craft cocktails. We also are able to offer food to go, if you are just driving on through!

We were visiting Escalante/Grand Staircase Utah NM, and decided to splurge big time for the Hell's Backbone Grill super-deluxe special Thanksgiving meal. Be sure to make a reservation -- they have 2 seatings on Thursday (2pm and 5pm) and one seating on Friday after T-Giving at 2pm. The drive from Escalante is absolutely spectacular ... so I recommend the 2pm seating so you don't have to drive back in the dark. Caveat: it's outrageously expensive ... and IMHO totally worth it as a once in a lifetime special Thanksgiving meal, more so because you don't have to do the cooking! Service starts outside where they served a great spiced hot cider and amazing, straight from the garden and local sources hors d'oeuvres. In a gorgeous setting. "Family style" meal served inside in a cozy, warm, rustic setting. Too many dishes to list here (take a look at their prix fixed menu) ... but courses include outside hors d'oeuvres and spiced rum. Then, amazing cheese pate with fried chips, plate of home-grown pickles, eggs, root veggies and more. Fresh, fantastic bread with herb butter. Salad with super dressing, pomegranites. Squash&?? soup ah-mazing. Sides? Well what I remember (all superb) 2 or 3 types of dressing (loved the Chile one), 2 gravies (mole for sure!), creamed spinach with outstanding hollandaise, amazing creamed squash w/homemade marshmallows, corn, grilled root veggies fresh from their garden, corn, best cranberry and cherry sauce with port ever, mashed potatoes and more and more and more. Oh yeah, excellent Turkey, too! Separate charges for drinks and wine. Then, a well-needed 20/30 minute break to wander around on the beautiful grounds for a bit of digestion. Then, back for dessert course, homemade candies and coffee. Incredibly wonderful chocolate pecan pie, pumpkin cheesecake (mousse?), other desserts (I think I was in food coma by then ). Handmade candies included fudge, butter mints (my favorite) and more. Just be sure to take long hike earlier in the day and a VERY light breakfast! Lovely talk about giving thanks from owner/proprietor. ps. Be sure to ask Blake, the proprietor, about her background. Fascinating!!

After having lunch with wine at the Burr Trails Grill , we headed to the neighbouring Burr Trails Outpost. Had some lovely coffee with local snacks(bakery products) . This place was a souvenir shop with lots of options. Most of the souvenirs pertaining to India( where I come from),and Nepal were incorrect in their proper description or its narration. Good for a coffee break.

THE BURR TRAIL GRILL

Allow me to begin by saying that while I was planning our family vacation to southern Utah (a first for us all- myself, hubby, and 3 teenagers) I had been really looking forward to visiting the other, more famous restaurant next door. We, in fact, actually drove there first and looked at the menu. All three of the kids turned up their noses at the gourmet ‘weird’ sounding food offered there, and so we drove over to the Burr Trail Grill, a much more promising-looking (and less expensive!) place. Everyone was happy! My picky eater got to have a completely plain, delicious burger, while I had a wonderfully unique sandwich with southwestern flavors, and everyone else was perfectly happy with their lunch as well. All of the sandwiches were very large, so sadly none of us had any room left for the wonderful looking pie.

So my suggestion is: if you’re looking for good food without too many surprises, (especially if you’re traveling with kids), the Burr Trail Grill is your best bet.

Magnolia's Street Food

This story begins with two people on two separate journeys whose paths eventually came together in the tiny majestic town of Boulder, Utah. With a new baby on the way the decision was made to stay and create a life here. In 2014 Magnolia Grace Apperson was born and Magnolias Street Food was established. It was early Saturday morning and we had just started our travel for the day. Being that we were camping, we were craving a good cup of joe. This was the place to find it. The owner brewed it right there as we chatted it up with him. What a friendly and engaging guy! We had already eaten breakfast, but if I was coming back through this area, I would certainly order it here. Shaded picnic tables on the grounds make it a very welcoming and peaceful place.

The expectation from the descriptive menu and details of the chef's training wasn't quite matched by the food presented.

Ingredients sourced locally/in house as far as possible and of good quality.

Our two dinners were very pleasant in every respect, without as above, really being outstanding, apart from the soups. Nothing to complain about, but just didn't match our expectations.

A little pricey perhaps, but the food was personally cooked by the chef and any alternative of unknown quality was a drive away.
