Comfortable and clean, Rising Sun Lodge offers modern air-conditioned rooms, tasty meals, and both indoor and outdoor common areas.
We spent 9 days at this great Lodge. Best food we had in PNG! Excellent, freshly cooked vegetables, best fish curry ever and good meat dishes. Rich breakfast with good toast, fresh fruits, omelettes and more. Staff was very kind and helpful. They helped us organizing day trips and also a boat trip to an island nearby. It felt like a family after 9 days :) Rooms were very clean, well equipped and made up every day. Shared bathroom was as well very clean and they had a good water pressure. Laundry was free. They have built beautiful new rooms with bathroom.

The only reason I didn't rate it "terrible" was because I wasn't the victim of criminality during my stay there. Thin mattress, air conditioning that does little other than to drip water on the floor. Communal laundry and bathroom facilities that I'm surprised I didn't catch a skin disease in. But still probably the best place in town.

I’ve stayed in waterfront rooms at Reasons (next door) and now Destiny. When you’re on the balcony staring out at the Buka Passage and all the boats shuffling back and forth, you can forgive most problems. Destiny is probably better, or at least better value – Reasons costs over K500, while my room at Destiny was K385 and, although generally old and rickety like Reasons, it had newer and quieter aircon and a new tv (not much on it so bring a USB). The shower had a weak dribble but it did usually get hot. Oh, there was a big turd sitting in the toilet bowl on arrival – they didn’t clean from Thursday to Sunday but seemed to clean daily after that, although apparently room 4 has no spare key and you’ll have to give it to them if you want it cleaned. They can wash a bag of clothes pretty well for K20. The power often goes out in Buka and they don’t like using the generator much, so plan on outages (Reasons runs theirs all the time if you’re desperate). There’s no wifi and 3G services in Buka seem to be getting worse. The restaurant is weird. The posted times for breakfast are 6am-7:30am (I never made it – I once got there right on 7:30 but everything was already locked up, although I'm sure I saw people breakfasting later than that once) and lunch is 11am-12pm. The sign says dinner is a more reasonable 6pm-9:30pm but I got there shortly after 6 and was told the times were actually 6:30-7. I stuck around and didn’t get food until after 7. I paid K45 for a good mackerel dish (the choice was just that or chicken), but I could have gone next door to Reasons and paid K50 for something similar, gotten it quickly, and gotten to eat it overlooking the sea. Reasons also does breakfast and lunch, plus Kuri Village Resort just beyond it does similar food to Destiny, plus there are several lunch options in town. If you go to the left side of the property and then past the small boat harbour and a workshop and bbq area and out to the water, you can climb down a low coral wall (or dive off) to an area of the passage 1-2m deep with a partially sandy bottom, good for swimming. Destiny also has a bunch of non-waterfront rooms but I generally don’t think cheaper rooms in PNG justify the big step down – it’s all about the waterfront here, otherwise you’re paying the same as in bigger cities but for inferior rooms. Destiny also has a website, which is a good start over the competitors. However, Buka’s developing and you want to keep an eye out to see who sets the pace – both Destiny and Reasons seem to be building out over the water, which will kill the current rooms’ views but probably create new rooms and restaurants.

I stayed here for two nights in May 2015. The town power had been off for a couple of months, so the electricity supply came from a generator, which was started up around 18h00 and kept on until around 24h00. This powered the air-conditioner in my room nicely. The room and attached bathroom were both very neat and clean, and came with a fridge, tea and coffee-making facilities, and a small packet of biscuits each day, a nice touch. There was plenty of hot water for showers. Breakfast and dinner were provided each day, with a choice from two or three main courses for dinner, plus a fruit platter. The porch outside the office, and the dining room, tended to draw guests together to meet in the late afternoon and evening. This was a nice place to stay, comfortable in an area where comfort is not that easy to provide: a credit to the staff.

It is located just 8 minutes walk to the shops. The place is popular for serving great food and the rooms are fully fitted with air condition and ceiling fans. Such great setting with very friendly staff.
