Bilene, also known as Praia do Bilene, is a town in southern Mozambique, lying 140 kilometres northeast of Maputo in the province of Gaza. It is known as a beach resort, lying on the Mozambique Channel. Noted for its calm and clear lagoon, the Uembje Lagoon, giving way to the pounding Indian Ocean beyond tall dunes, it is reported to be the closest beach destination to the city of Johannesburg in neighboring South Africa.

Facing the lagoon, the complex restaurant offers indoor as well as outdoor sitting. The decor is a little out of date but the food is delicious, especially the seafood platter. The service is both prompt and friendly. An address to remember when in Bilene!

Garth, the owner, runs this small beach bar centrally located in Bilene. Do not get fooled by the looks of this establishment. It is rough and minimalistic in its own way (this is required according to Garth, since otherwise things would mysteriously disappear, i.e. be stolen). But the position with this view, and the breeze to cool you down.. We love it.
It really does not make things any more complicated when Garth makes sure you get good quality meals in front of you. He is aware of the fact that good food requires high quality 'raw material' to begin with. And he makes sure that what goes out from the kitchen is as good as it possibly can get in a place like this. Especially when you ask for seafood. Challenge him, you won't be disappointed.
Us being there after season might have helped us in being so overwhelmed; Never crowded, most of the times we were the only couple there: Full attention.
He assisted us in getting a boat ride over to "The mouth", where you get to experience the Indian Ocean close up. Cheaper than the "Service crew" by our hotel. And two really nice young local men took us there and back.
Do not forget: Bonzo's is a Beach Bar. Drinks and simple food. But if he has it; You will get it, and well done too :)

So we decided to venture out and make the long drive to Bilene one sunday morning. We had heard such raving about the place we just had to check it out, so we drove the 2 1/2 - 3 hours to there. The trip would have been faster if there was not so much construction and the speed limit wasn't set to 40kms at some spots. Beware of the cops cause they know this is a popular spot for natives and visitors so watch the speed limits especially when you are coming into a town. The drive was still a nice and easy one since it was a straight shot for the most part. We made the right off of N1 and followed that till we got to a roundabout and at the 3rd exit you will see the hotel "Hotel Bilene" and right on it's right is the restaurant. We had driven past it on our way to the beach and made a mental note to stop there for lunch since it looked pretty nice. On our way back we stopped and was seated at a clean and nice table. They gave us menus which was completely in portuguese but thanks to Google Translate we were able to figure it out. They said they could do something nice for the kids such as chicken strips and we ordered their chicken dish, the only chicken dish on there, praying silently that the food would be good since the waiters english was not so good. But boy oh boy were we pleasantly surprised. The food came out and I am telling you I thought we were at a 5 star restaurant. But wait, first we were given a small hors d'oeuvres which was complimentary and was very nice, then our meals late came out. The food was excellent! Everything tasted lovely. I will make sure to post pictures if this listing is approved. We didn't get a dessert after because we were so stuffed but we were so impressed. We were the only people in the restaurant so we were well cared for by the staff whose manager came out to check on us. And the most amazing thing to me is that the cost of the meal was at least 600 Meticais cheaper than the 2 pizzas and burger we had ordered from Mimmos the night before. Amazing! The bathroom and bar area where also nicely decorated and clean. Will definitely be heading back there if we ever visit again, and will tell others about it.

We went for breakfast. Food was OK, with a variety of options, came relatively quickly, and staff were pleasant and helpful.
