Big Sur Resorts | Places to Stay in Big Sur

May 1, 2023 Randal Brittian

Jagged cliffs pummeled by surf line the Pacific Coast Highway along Big Sur, creating some of California's most memorable ocean vistas between Carmel and the northern tip of San Luis Obispo County. Jack Kerouac and Henry Miller found inspiration in its fog-banked canyons and meadows. Gray whales migrate past twice a year, and elephant seals bask on the sandy shores. Luxury hotels, restaurants and art galleries cluster in a six-mile strip, giving way to redwood-filled state parks on either side.

A good revisiting with something bad

Reviewed By PhotoTrekkerWalomi

I stayed here before and gave a 5 star review before. That's why I decided to revisit here again after they open up more restaurants and activities. I have a two days staying in this property this time. However, I think it is bad in the first day for most of the food. The beef is almost well-done and dry when I asked for medium-rare, and some other meat was bad. Also, the service at Sur House was bad, I asked for mint tea and green tea first time and got 2 mint tea, and I asked again for mint tea and green tea and got 2 jasmine tea. It's pretty bad... I was about to give a 2 star review this time, but the food on second night on Sur House is great again like what I used to taste. The service is far better, and the dessert plating is really really good! That's the reason I increase my review back to 4 star. I still like how the pools and rooms of the hotel just like before!

Amazing first time experience

Reviewed By verdahk2021

My partner and I had an amazing time here. We only stayed for one night (which you can only do if there is only one night available in a series on the calendar) but it definitely made us want to come back. The yurts themselves were just AMAZING. We stayed in a queensize yurt that was the comfiest, softest bed I've ever laid on. I usually prefer a more firmer mattress when I sleep, but this was definitely a win for people who love cloud-like beds and for others, you can at least definitely appreciate the comfort of it. The yurt itself was soo big, it had two seating areas along with the bed and a personal sink. The bathrooms are shared, right near the check-in and dining building, but they were so nice and well-maintained! Each yurt had its own personal balcony, looking out into the ocean. The resort had its own organic garden as well, and the free breakfast made from the garden was so tasty and real easy on the stomach. There's very limited internet service, so I advise really immersing yourself into the technological disconnection. It was so peaceful and serene. Definitely recommend for folx looking to get away to soothe work or life burnout and/or wanting to get closer and more in touch with nature.

Great place to stay in Big Sur

Reviewed By Stef C

My wife and I stayed here one night on our trip up the PCH, making this our layover between Santa Barbara and Carmel. It is a collection of rustic cabins nestled in the redwoods right on Hwy 1. While modest, the cottages are impeccably clean and as cozy and charming as you could possibly want. There are no amenities: just a very warm comfortable bed, a few chairs and a bathroom. We were in the one called Chateau Fiasco but I'm sure the others are similar. There is one short / steep walk from the grounds up to a view of the ocean, but otherwise there is nothing within walking distance. The three state parks with Pfeiffer in their names are all nearby, however.

Adventure

Reviewed By tomhW6293WV

5 stars but please read on. This was on our West Coach Adventure Roadtrip. I chose this play as a risk, as it was one of the few places in Big Sur. We had heard before our trip the tragedy of the fire damaging the office and restaurant, making them unserviceable, but we decided to keep the reservation. On the drive up the coast we got a call from the Lucia Lodge- thank you- advising us that a rockslide had closed Hwy #1. After a debate we decided to detour and come south adding 3 hours to the drive to get there in the dark. No internet service, it was difficult to even find. But wow, we woke up to paradise on the coast. It was everything I imagined about Big Sur. The room was dated. We saw no staff, had no services, it was overpriced for the accommodation, until you saw the view. It was worth it. Afterwards I found out this motel was used as a setting in the Netflix Series- Nurse Ratchet. Am I correct?

Fantastic midpoint spot on PCH!

Rustic small cabins at a fantastic vantage point along the central Cali coast. Our cabin had an amazing view and we spotted a few whale spouts. The fireplace was warm and toasty. Not fancy but delightful! We would definitely spend a night here again.
