Bhutan Lodges | Places to Stay in Bhutan

May 3, 2023 Franklyn Hardiman

Remote Bhutan first allowed the world a peek inside in 1974. With four millennia of habitation, the Himalayan kingdom offers a trove of archaeological treasures, including many ornate temples and dzong fortresses. Isolation has preserved the heavily Buddhist-influenced culture of the last Shangri-La.

Where Dreams Come Alive

Reviewed By hayhayz

There are no words to truly describe the experience Gangtey Lodge offers but to not drop a review on such a fantastic accommodation would be a crime. From the moment you step foot, the welcoming party literally rolls out the red carpet treatment with a song and line up. Bhutan in general is a breathtaking stunning place but the location and surroundings of Gangtey Lodge is nothing short of magical. Soak in the natural beauty and explore the area on beautiful walks and hikes, then come back to have your shoes cleaned (we were first shy and hesitant with the offer to scrub off our shoes but then to step into the resort with muddy footprints would be absolutely unforgiveable). From big picture, to all the fine touches this is truly one of the BEST accommodations in the world and our only regret is not spending more nights here.

Soednam Zingkha Heritage

Soednam Zingkha is an immaculately restored traditional farm house nestled in the village of Hatey that combines heritage with modern comfort. Customary paintings, earthen walls, and ancient timbers complement the comfortable bedding, heated rooms, and modern bathrooms to create an unforgettable atmosphere for all our guests. Situated on two acres of land, the lodge boasts ten guest rooms, a reception area, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area, and a lounge. Hand-painted murals adorn the walls, and there is an exquisite Choesham (alter room) available for guests who wish to meditate or makeofferings. Soednam Zingkha Heritage Lodge offers an authentic and traditional taste of Bhutan with the conveniences of a modernhotel. Our lodge is located in a quiet, established village in the upper Haa Valley. The 60 or so households that make up the village of Hatey are made from rammed earth and wood and built in the traditional Bhutanese style. The hamlet is nestled high in the valley amidst the wheat and barley fields of small family farms. Cattle, horses, and the occasional yak graze the slopes amongst native flora and verdant evergreen forests. It is a quiet, peaceful place where you can experience a centuries-old way of life in authentic and beautiful surroundings. Whether on foot or on horseback, the village of Hatey has many hidden charms that reveal themselves to the interested traveler. Localguides are readily available for tours to any place of interest in the valley. Guests have a wide variety of outdoor activities to choose from. Our lodge opens onto the narrow streets and pathways of the hamlet, and a leisurely walk around Hatey can easily fill an afternoon. For the more adventurous, a trek to one of our local monasteries will take guests across mountain streams, through pine forests, and up into the surrounding mountains. Multi-day treks lead visitors into high mountain pastures filled with glacial lakes and magnificent views of the rugged mountains that separate the Haa Valley from Tibet. Count on the experienced local guides at Soednam Zingkha to arrange a hike, horse ride, or longer trek into the mountains. Whether it is an afternoon stroll through the village or a strenuous journey to the many alpine lakes in the mountains around Haa, Soednam Zingkha can ensure your adventure is one to remember. At the end of a day’s journey, the Soednam Zingkha guest house is there to welcome travelers with warmth and hospitality. Whether it’s sipping the local ara, soaking in a hot stone bath, or sitting by an outdoor bonfire, guests can relax and enjoy the local culture from the comfort of the guest house grounds.

Just One Night Here

We arrived in Haa Valley in Oct to find out that there was festival going on:-) We were there for two scheduled festivals so this one was a total bonus. The room in this hotel was a bit on the small side but comfortable. Food was typical Bhutan buffet with little variety but that was true on almost every place we stayed for 13 days. Not the best nor the worst place we stayed in on this journey.

Really nice Family, but average room

Reviewed By Travelling_Axe

This lodge is outside the main village, situated between farmers' fields. Our room was in the main building, not the annex. It was in the back, on the ground floor, with no views. The room was quite large, but felt cramped as there was little space around the beds. We kept the curtains closed because they opened onto walkways. The bedroom and bathroom had electric heaters which worked well. On arrival, our bathroom heater was missing -- so it got really cold -- but the next morning, they replaced quickly. There was no wood stove in this room, but there are in the annex. It's a quiet location, but there are barking dogs on the property at night. (They were usually sleeping during the day, so we were tempted to wake them up in retaliation.) Bottled water is supplied in the rooms. There is no safe in the room. The beds are uncomfortably hard. Meals were served in the main reception building. The food here was really good. Staff were very friendly and efficient. There was a wood stove in the dining area to keep the chill off.

Warm introduction to Bhutan

Reviewed By nyctravelr

A perfect place for a welcoming and genuine introduction to Bhutan. Rooms are spacious with a comfortable sitting area. A pot of tasty lemon ginger tea was awaiting us and indicative of the level of hospitality. Aunty prepared bountiful and extremely tasty meals (6-8+ separate dishes at dinner, extensive breakfasts), and the service was outstanding. Someone from the family also ate with us, so we had the chance to learn more about the country and the culture in a more relaxed setting. Although local dogs can be quite noisy, our room was quiet. As is common throughout the country the hotel does not have central heating, but the heater worked quite well and our room was toasty throughout our stay. Wifi was effective (much better than 4* hotels in Sri Lanka and Egypt, to name a few). Was considering staying at the Taj (am big fan of the chain), but am very glad that we stayed here.

Mixed experience

Reviewed By G-Steph888

This is a difficult place to rate. We stayed 4 nights. Two nights were terrible and two nights amazing. The first two nights were in the original building in a super small room facing the drying line (which is saying a lot considering Bhutan hotel rooms are usually huge). We did not have an adequate room heater, no hot water (water heater electrical breaker is turned off during portion of night to preserve the circuit - would be understandable if told before hand), broken toilet seat. When space was available the owner moved us to the brand new building. Those rooms were enormous (in addition they each had an attached solarium to enjoy tea and views). We had heat and hot water. Food is why you should choose this hotel. The owners wife is a chef. She prepared local cuisine in ways we did not experience anywhere else during our 21 day trip. My only recommendation is to think about quantity. This was the only place we stayed where we felt like we did not have enough to eat at dinner (portions were unusually small and could not get seconds). The owner is one of the friendliest people we met. He truly aspires for every guest to have a fabulous stay (we were just a little unlucky?)

Lechuna Heritage Lodge

Buried in history, the Lechuna Heritage Lodge is a farmhouse located in the picturesque village of Lechu. The valley offers scenic walks along natural paths through untouched villages. Visit monasteries, alive with culture and tradition. The lodge is situated at an altitude of 2,960 m the western-most and smallest district of Bhutan, which has a population of 20,000. Time spent in the Haa Valley offers everything one might expect to see and experience in a country famed for its living culture and traditions.

Traditional hospitality

Reviewed By steven s

The Lechuna Heritage Lodge was one of the highlights of our eight day visit to Bhutan. It was converted from a 100-year old farm house with much exposed, decorated wood inside and out. Our room, though not large, was comfortable, clean and warm, even with snow outside. Although the shower and toilet facilities were just down the corridor from our room, this did not detract from our stay. The staff were charming and very welcoming. The dining room is in a separate building a few metres across the courtyard garden where the meals were simple but good and plentiful. There are several pleasant walks in and around the village and the Haa Valley with good birdlife. This was a lovely place to stay and enjoy life a little closer to Bhutanese traditions.

Basic Hotel

Reviewed By MKTR

We spent 3 nights at this hotel during our two-week tour around Bhutan, and this was the worst hotel we stayed at. We were not expecting luxury but at least a friendly and cosy family run hotel, however, it was very cold and soulless. Perhaps it comes alive when its conference facilities are being used or when there are more than 6 guests staying here. We acknowledge that we stayed here when tourists were limited due to coronavirus but some of our experiences were due to the physical nature of the hotel that would exist anyway. There was no welcome on arrival, there was no heating in the communal areas, and the main toilets had no locks on the doors. When we came down to dinner we thought it odd that guests had their coats on or had brought blankets from the room. However, this was because there was no heating in the bar, the reception fire was not lit, and the restaurant wood burner was only on for short periods. There were not many guests staying here and so we though that the meals would be a bit more elaborate or cooked to order. On two nights we had rice, potatoes, noodles and vegetable soup, which was all very bland. On the third night ferns and cheese were added for variety. We were accommodated in the new building. The rooms are very spacious and the bed was large and comfortable. We found that there was only enough hot water for one shower and the next person had to wait 15 minutes for it to heat up again. Seemingly, some rooms have a bath so I do not know if they have better water supply. The rooms have a simple open clothes-hanging space, no drawers, no safe, and no heating except for a small electric fire. Everything is timber clad and a relative commented on FaceTime that it looked like we were staying in a shed. One safety point is that the timber floors in the large bathrooms are varnished, which makes them very slippery when wet. The best point was its proximity to the airport, which meant we could leave easily.
