Gasthaus Willems

It’s now our third dining experience at this establishment, it was by serendipity that we discovered this restaurant in a back cobble stone street in the old Centre of Mainz (Altstadt), located right across from the beautiful St. Ignaz church.Willems provides outdoor seatings until 10 pm during summer time. Throughout the year patrons can enjoy their cozy indoor dining room inside one of the historical buildings of Altstadt, it is clean and the decor is lovely. The manager, Jan Willem Appeltrath will receive you, as he operates the front end service with extreme attention, while overseeing the food preparation in the kitchen. He will assist as well in choosing your matching wine out of their selection of fine Wines of Rheinland-Pfalz.The food menu is select but varied enough to include Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian and of course Meat-Lovers will find their high quality and freshly prepared accompaniment prepared by a passionate cook. The organic and carefully chosen products and the attention of the chef is what makes this culinary experience one of the most outstanding you can have within this region. I strongly recommend anybody with a refined taste and a demanding palate to enjoy a beautiful ambience at a great value here at Willelms.

Weinhaus Zum Beichtstuhl

My husband and I stumbled upon Zum Beichtstuhl - lucky us! We were early enough that we didn't need a reservation, and were able to sit on the patio. We started out with 2 dishes - a sausage platter and a cheese plate. Such a perfect complement to the fabulous wines that our waiter suggested! We then went on to share a tasty soup and smoked salmon salad. The food was top notch and the service was friendly and knowledgeable.

Weinstube Rote Kopf is tucked away in an alley around the corner from the Gutenberg Museum and central Old Town Mainz. At first glance, it is just what you might expect for an authentic old-world German eatery: ancient building, wood panel walls, and picnic-type tables full of happy locals. Our servers were jovial, very helpful, and contribute to a most welcoming atmosphere. The wine selections are fabulous, but can be perplexing if you don't know your basics about the area wines. We had an excellent Weingut Udo Ott half-dry Riesling. The food was excellent, and the young chef was on his game the day we visited. My daughter ordered a Salat "Avignon" with butter lettuce, mushrooms, and goat cheese for her main course. Lucky she did because the service was huge and could easily feed two hungry people as a starter. I ordered a daily special pork medallions in a mushroom cream sauce, a side order of spaetzle, and a large side of white asparagus in Hollandaise sauce. Had we not been recovering from an overnight flight from South Africa, we would have parked ourselves here for a lot longer. Heartily recommended!

Weinstube Hottum

We found this place on Yelp when searching for "cheap eats" and we were not disappointed. When we found it we were slightly confused as there is no hostess stand, you seat yourself. They do have an English menu which we appreciated. My husband wound up with a braised beef dish and fried potatoes. I had a garden salad with a standard German dressing then fried eggs with ham on toast, a Mainz speciality. Food quality was great as was the service.

Good food, wines, and service. The owner is friendly and the surroundings, both inside and on the outside tables, are pleasant. We liked the menu at Weinstube Losch, next door, a bit better, but zum Bacchus makes an excellent flammkuchen-- a must-try if you have never had one. This is an excellent place to eat..

We were delayed a day arriving in Germany and as a result missed visiting a winery. This place made up for it as they had a 'carousel of wine'. We tried 6 different varieties of local wine and sat outside at a picnic table with locals. We didn't order food but I wish we had the food looked amazing. We did buy two bottles of wine and were surprised at the prices, maybe around 7 Euro at most? We did have a small incident because we kept trying to flag down the waitress and a local grew annoyed at us. He went inside and fetched her for us. We were a bit embarrassed because of the language barrier and realizing we were annoying the locals. Either way, don't be afraid to go inside and ask for your bill.Dear Gidgetglam, many thanks for your good assessment. We are glad that to you liked our "wine personalities". Please, excuse the problems on the account - fine that regional guests helped in this situation.Kind regards from the heart of Mainz's old town Astrid, Stefan Michel and their team

Am Holztor

We’ve been going to Am Holztor for many years now on our visits from Canada to Mainz and have always enjoyed stopping by this restaurant for a couple of beers and to get away from the typical tourist haunts. Both of us ordered the famous half dinner and fried potatoes, but, after enjoying the lovely fresh green salad, were sadly disappointed by what was presented. The potatoes were delicious however the chicken, as beautifully presented as it was, turned to an almost sawdust like powder when cut into. Tough, stringy little bites washed down with dark beer and out the door we went ... return? Highly unlikely given the multitude of restaurants in Mainz to enjoy!Dear Bill, thanks for your review. I am not happy to hear, we couldn't satisfy you this time. Sorry for that! Unfortunatly you didn't complain to my staff, so we didn't have a chance to make it better. Since it wasn't your first visit and obviously you have been happy with your previous visits, it's hard to understand - because we always ask our guests if they are happy with their meal. We hope, you'll it another try and please: if you not satisfied with what's on your plate: let us know! Thanx again and happy holidays.
