The proprietor said he had been in business four years and that most of his customers are tourists. Regrettably, we did not have the same extraordinary experience other reviewers had. We tried the sushi/tempura combo. The sushi was fresh, but the tempura tasted of too-old grease. Such a charming fellow; hope he succeeds.

My wife and I tried the local specialty, Hida beef, in this beautifully restored building in Takayama's Sanmachi Traditional Buildings Preservation Area. We had sliced Hida beef marinated in a miso sauce cooked to order on a bed of rice with a 64 degree egg. I had my beef rare and it was deliciously tender.

Hidabeef and Takayama local sushi! Very reasonable!
The surroundings lack any of the feel of a sushi restaurant and it looks a bit more like a cafe or a fast food place, but the sushi is great. We had the hida beef set and a fish set that included some lovely little squid and some sea urchin amongst the fish. Very nice.

There are only 8 seats in this tiny sushi bar but the sushi chef has hand-written welcome signs in English, Spanish, French, and Italian. When he realized we speak Spanish he tried out his Spanish with us. There were only two other customers (clearly regulars) and they joined in, resulting in delightful multilingual conversations. The sushi was fresh, not fancy, but perfect for a simple meal, along with miso soup, and a fruity "helado" for dessert. This was an unexpected pleasurable dinner.
