Things to do in Kew

A traditional Japanese Restaurant situated in Melbourneâs CBD, Kenzan has been described as a stalwart in the Melbourne culinary scene since opening in 1981.
If you have travelled in Japan you will know standards for service are extremely high. The care shown by staff in restaurants - or even cafes - in Japan is exemplary. As we entered Kenzan, my coat was taken and hung on a rack, with the number of the table on a card attached to the hanger. We chose one of each of the two choices for the set lunch bento. ($40 and $43). As we sipped sake we were asked if we'd like the miso soup now or later. In Japan, miso is served at the end of a meal, but we chose to enjoy it first, to warm us up on the cold day. The contents of the bento boxes were absolutely delicious. Both included sashimi. Amazingly soft and rich salmon, and some very nice tuna. My box included tempura, which was perfectly crisp, without being overcooked. My partner's box had chicken teriyaki, equally delicious. Both of us enjoyed the softness of the large smashed prawn dumplings and the tiny bits of salad. As we left, another member of staff immediately helped me into my coat. That's service! We have eaten at Kenzan several times in the past and never been disappointed. We'll be back, soon!

UPDATEÂ A new operator ... great presentation ... why not seasoned those Prawn Tempura?Wafu Steak made of sliced meat, first time for everything, not medium rare as ordered, instead well done on the hotplate. JT-18/05/2019PREVIOUSThis version of Japanese cuisine is okay .....Okay it's not the most authentic Japanese food around, however it's doable and quite enjoyable.

Minamishima is a Japanese restaurant that serves the omakase of Chef Koichi Minamishima. Tucked down a one-way street in Richmond, it's the most intimate Japanese dining experience in Melbourne.
I guess that when a restaurant has such great reviews and charges 'top dollar' you set the bar really high. The food, service and matching sake were faultless but three plates of sushi were rather bland and 'samey'. When you think of all the Japanese possibilities it was disappointing there was not a bit more variety. Would I go back or recommend? Sadly the answer is 'no'.

As others have noted, one of the strIking things about this restaurant is its fresh and innovative presentation of fine dishes prepared and treated with respect. Even quite traditional and commonplace Japanese dishes like Salmon Nigiri and gyoza are served with a creative twist. We visit plenty of Japanese restaurants pursuing our passion for sushi and itâs great to have found one on our own doorstep that has stepped up the local standard. Be sure to drop in with friends. The more at the table, the greater variety of share dishes you can try.

Had not been here for two years. Signs of decline by the twelve clients at lunch and the sullen waitress. We ordered from the daily specials ,the spinach salad was overdressed and messy, the eel sushi was flaccid tasteless encased in gluggy rice, the crumbed whiting was over cooked and the prawn tempura was greasy. Why would you bother!

I have been going to Samurai for years for their unbelievable three-course set meal menu. Since the new renovations, and an upgrade to the touchscreen system (which is fun in its own right), unfortunately this meal deal is no longer available, much to my disappointment. The venue is fresh and lively, and welcoming. The food is of its usual excellent quality, and the prices are still reasonable (but not what I had been experiencing for so long in the past). The sushi is still delicious, but sadly I will no longer travel here just for that purpose. I still recommend this place, if you live nearby.
