Things to do in Karatsu
We just stumbled across this gem walking down an arcade in Karatsu on Sunday. The friendly owner , Ezaki Junji, was putting out his lunch sign and asked if we needed help. Since there was not much open on Sunday and we noticed that he had a special sushi lunch for 1700 yen (Sunday only), we went in. The shop seats only six people--four at the counter and two at tables. It is very elegant with light wood and airey white shades. The ceramics are from Karatsu. The place is perfectly clean--as a high class sushi place should be. There is not the slightest odor of fish or frying. I assume it is non-smoking. Junji worked in San Diego and his English is excellent. The first thing to understand about this class of sushiya is that you don't tell the master what you want--he tells you. His fish are all local Karatsu fish. He will serve you what is seasonal. Also, he will decide which sushi needs wasabi and how much. He will put it on the nigiri himself. We had nine different pieces of nigiri-sushi. It was served on a beautiful blue plate. Each bite was pure poetry. Junji kept up a nice discussion with all the guests and included us in a most hospitable way. We were also served an exquisite miso soup and fruit. I am guessing that most of his guests just put themselves in his hands. He is laid back enough that you could tell him how much you want to spend and he would work with that. I am guessing that his omokase (his selection) would start around 3000 yen for a really nice meal. I hesitated about writing this review because I wanted to keep this treasure a secret--but that would have been unfair. I only regret that we discovered Ezaki sushi on our last day in Karatsu.
We found this place on TripAdvisor and were delighted with the experience. Only 7 seats in this small sushi bar which is open for lunch and dinner. The sushi was good, the kani (crab) miso was delicious, and the miso soup was excellent. We had tea, sake and beer to accompany our food. The real experience, though, was the owner-operator who speaks enough English to tell a few stories and share experiences. He was warm and engaging while preparing our meal. It was one of our best restaurant experiences ever.

This restaurant has earned 2 Michelin stars , yet to me it faired more or less on the average levelThe chef speaks English fluently , I would've highly recommend this place if one is within the area however not to go out of your way for a visit The interesting thing is they don't serve tuna , and to my liking they serve wild salmon sushi from Hokkaido which was tasty
