An ancient city in the Flemish province of West Flanders, Ieper (as it’s known in the Flemish tongue) has enjoyed financial and cultural status since the 12th century. Today, visitors can check out remnants of its impressive past, including ramparts that date back to 1385 and an historic moat, which now is a haven for wildlife. Ieper found itself in the middle of World War I and suffered tremendous damage to all of its buildings, but has been both reconstructed in its medieval style and built up with modern structures.

This is a restaurant, out of the city by the Lille gate, Rijselseweg, a bit further than the military barracks. A place where local Ieper and Zillebeke folks eat. It is a top location for steaks ( famous Belgian blue and Irish Angus ) but also those that not prefer meat will find their choice in the menu card. Ask the lady of the house any suggestions and she will help you out. End of the evening, you will encounter the chef, who likes to have a talk with the customers. A very cousy, Flemish place, out of the business of the city centre

BREAKFAST - LUNCH - BAR - KITCHEN From Tapas to Moelleux, from sludge tongue to Irish Rib Eye: Bistro En Haut, a tasty kitchen with fresh top products and ingredients. Taste our own matured meat !! Meat from home-grown, selected and processed by Timo, but
We found it extremely difficult to find a restaurant that opened for breakfast in Ypres. After walking around for half an hour we discovered Bistro En Haut which is above a local Spar. What a find. Beautiful cooked breakfast. Wasn't cheap at 16 euros but it was something special all beautifully presented. (Bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage, baked beans, mushrooms, fried bread, tomato). One of our party had a continental breakfast. Again beautiful (croissants, rolls, ham, cheese, fresh fruit juice). We were told only 2 places open for breakfast in Ypres - Mimi's and Bistro En Haut. Service was fabulous so friendly and helpful (total opposite to Vivaldi Restaurant - the waitress there was so unwelcoming -see my review).Definitely recommend.Hello anne, Thank you for your nice comment! I'm glad too her you had a wonderfull breakfast here with us in Bistro En Haut Ypres! I will give your compliments to our staf Jana and Ann! See you a next time, Kind regards, Sophie

After reading the reviews here, decided to give this restaurant a try and am so glad we did. Ate here on a Friday evening at the end of the last month, myself, my wife and two children, and have to say the steak ranks as one of the best, if not the best I have ever eaten. The service was excellent, and talking to the chef and his family after service, you can see how passionate they are on making this place great. I am desperately now searching for a way to get back to Ieper and to enjoy a meal here again. Worth the whole ten minute walk from the centre of Ieper, this place is not to be missed by anyone who enjoys steak.

What to do and see in Ieper (Ypres), Belgium: The Best Places and Tips

Visited De Voerman in Ypres for the fourth - and the last - time last night. We used to spend a pleasant few hours over an excellent meal, but that has changed dramatically. The free wonderful appetizer of Parma ham and Italian salami, good for a free starter, which we enjoyed so much, all of a sudden gave place to two tiny bowls, one with literally four spoonfuls of fish spread (tasty), the other with 6 olives, plus six pieces of melba toast for our party of FOUR adults...We ordered two Irish rib eye steaks, one mixed grill and a devil fish. The steaks were very good and so was the fish, but the mixed grill looked like it was prepared beforehand and just warmed up, with the result of the spare ribs and the two sausages being dried out, tough and slightly burned. The wine was fine. However, as the evening proceeded (we booked for 6:30 pm), the place got crowded to overflowing. It was practically impossible to move the chairs when getting up as the tables were too close to each other and also the tables were too small for the served meals. Quantity got precedence over quality, unfortunately, and it could be seen - the waiters were rushed, also only one cook for what I would estimate to be at least 60 people all waiting to be served. My steak was large, and I asked for the remaining piece to be wrapped to take home (the last time the owner actually vacuum packed it for me!). The waiter did not return,so I asked him upon leaving. He disappeared in the kitchen and after 5 minutes came out with a plastic baggie, shoved it in my hand and ran off again. When I opened the baggie, I found a small piece of spare ribs and a tiny piece of steak, both burned black! OK, I showed it to the owner, who saw the pathetic state of the beef and pork, but could only say "Oh, sorry, we must have mixed it up with table 10". I thought that was an extremely unprofessional answer and attitude from what we believed to be a very good restaurant. What a disappointment!!! Well, they just lost more local clients. We left the restaurant angry, with a feeling of a spoiled evening at the cost of â¬uro 138.00 I rate this experience as POOR and would NOT recommend this restaurant again.

Lovely and relatively small restaurant with a simple but good menu. Two of us chose the cheese croquettes salads and one the warm goat's cheese salad - fresh, substantial and with a huge variety of salad, vegetables, fruit and a lovely honey and mustard dressing all washed down with delicious wine bought by the carafe. Nice touches included a lovely celery soup amuse-bouche, pate and fresh, crusty bread. We were lucky that they could squeeze us in on a Sunday evening so probably worth booking. Friendly staff and attentive service. Well worth its rating on Trip Advisor.
