We are a group of Americans who came to France to attend the wedding of a French couple who we all knew in the States for a few years when they lived in Annapolis. They were showing us around the Pyrenees Atlantic region by car when we stopped in the Auberge by chance. The host and hostess were gracious and welcoming. They recommended a tradional Basque lunch of ham and pate, roast chicken in a tomato/ red pepper sauce, a local cheese with cherry jam and finally a wonderful Basque cake for dessert. All with a locally produced red wine.Wow, what a great lunch! We didn't want to leave but stayed awhile to chat with the hosts. We highly recommend that if you find yourself in this beautiful Basque region that you seek out this wonderful little restaurant.
Bravo!

This area is terrible for unsuspecting tourists in late September. Everything is shut but there are no notices, no warning and in many cases the menus and notices to say the restaurant is open are still out for all to see.

Me and my family had planned a tour to the Basque French Country and chose Le Relais de Tilleuls in Hasparren to make a stop and have lunch. The choice was not random, I based my decision on two positive reviews that I read on some very famous travelers guides so after the fiasco that awaited us I did not feel too responsible...Anyway, do not believe what the guides say. This place sucks big time, honestly. If you fantasize about spending a romantic date or have a pleasant time eating out in the magnificent area, get anywhere else since you will enjoy more than here. Guaranteed. The "plate of the day" consisted on some disgusting cheese quiche stuffed with chorizo, as an appetizer, followed by some marinated beef with txistorra (basque chorizo again) in a skewer. The starter turned me off just by its appearance and did not dare to try it. The meat tasted old, undone, foul. The dessert was equally unmemorable. My son did not eat a single bite of his food, not one. It's ridiculous that being half an hour away from the ocean they do not offer at least one fresh fish dish on the menu as an alternative...and this is the peak of tourist season! My advice about eating in the area is simple: go to the other side of the border or bring your own food.

And for a good reason: we didn't expect it. We were roaming through the French Basque Country, regretting our decision of leaving Biarritz and having lunch elsewhere, when we arrived to a town called Urt. We found this place -La Galoupe- thanks to the signs that announced it throughout the town, and our first surprise was the amount of cars parked outside of it. We got the last free spot. Then, we went in and realized that we were in a typical Basque Etxea. My first dish was a melted Camembert. It was delicious, as I have never tasted a better tasting Camembert. My second dish was an "alose" with a sauce that was very pleasing to the taste. It was garnished with rice and zucchini, both with hints of turmeric. The only drawback was that the fish had lots of small little bones which were too big to be chewn. It was the taste of the fish that kept me from giving up on it. For dessert, I ordered what they called a "sheep yogurt". It was actually a "cuajada". Nevertheless, it was refreshing and very tasty. All in all, if you pass near Urt at lunchtime, La Galoupe is a must.

We stayed at the hotel to which this restaurant is part.Extensive basque based menu, (should have done our homework before visit) which took a bit of getting to grips with but our selections proved to be well prepared and superb to eat.Service was casual and efficiently provided.Good wine list which included local wines. The dinning room was possibly a little austere but none the less we enjoyed our meals over three days stay.
