This is a delightful mountain restaurant serving a range of things to eat -including wholesome and tasty filled rolls, and nice cakes and pastries -and of course hot and cold drinks. We only had selections from the above -but we are told that their soups are wholesome and delicious. The food is inexpensive by usual mountain restaurant standards! There is an outside seating area which is south facing and a large, new, warm, covered seating area with lovely views over the slopes, valley and mountains beyond. The service is friendly and they have a couple of lovely dogs too!

We have now been coming almost for 10 years to Lou Tchappe, both winter and summer; and it still remains one of our favourites. In a simple but tasteful decor, the house offers a short and simple seasonal menu. Try the creamy Malfatti in its secret sauce or the Orzetti,a fragrant risotto made out of barley and served in a delicate parmesan bowl, or gnocchi made out of chesnut flour or just a simple lamb cotelette. The house also serves specialties from the Aosta Valley. Don't forget to ask for breaded ceps when in season! All delicious and no fuss!

Restaurants in the area tend to offer very traditional regional cuisine - here the young chef tries something a little different. Mind you, most products used are local and dishes are not outlandish, it's just that there is a bit more creativity, modernity and personality, which in my view is to be applauded.A vegetable tarte with courgette flowers came with a wonderful saffron sauce and was very pleasant (I just would have liked a bit more courgettes and courgette flavour in the tarte). Strozzapreti (sort of dumplings) were well-made and the sweet onion cream was excellent. A venison stew with polenta cream was perhaps a little mono-dimensional but certainly satisfying. The best dish of the evening was a delicate and perfectly cooked (steamed) local trout. Desserts were tasty and balanced (a 'crema di Cogne' and a yogurt mousse with wild berries), but they were the only two ones on offer - I think desserts are also about pastry work and texture, not just 'creamy stuff', and so perhaps a little more effort in this section could be hoped for in the future...(however the 'tegoline' -tuiles- with the mousse were good).Service was very pleasant in a quiet evening. The wine list could be improved and integrated but had some good choices. The room is great, and so is the mise en place. Prices are fair for the quality. All in all I had a very good dinner here, with carefully chosen ingredients of good quality and a skilled chef at the stoves. A few improvements here and there and this cute restaurant, still in its first year of life under the current management, could become a top one.

Alpine Refugees are time by time changing their mission and approach: more and more proposing themselves as small mountain hotels rather than hosting points for alpinists and trekkers. Rifugio Citta' di Chivasso and his manager Sandro are trying to keep the previous mission meanwhile making comfortable to stay there. Last time I arrived there after a long trek under a heavy rain. It was fantastic to enter at the warm common room with the wonderful ceramic stove, to dry, to eat and to talk with persons and hosts. Once in you will feel as to be at an quite isolated place, even if quite close to the Col Nivolet Road.

Our Chef Graziano Sperandio is working with us for over 12 years and offers every day menus and dishes rich of authentic perfumes and traditional flavours, accompanied by the best wines of the Aosta Valley, in a warm and welcoming mountain environment. In
Good food, well presented and in plentiful supply. Rustic food rather than gourmet but none the worse for that. Pleasant surroundings with a lively, noisy, atmosphere when service is in full swing but always full when we were there. We were staying in the hotel on a half board basis but the menu prices looked very reasonable, with local produce available.

I knew this location from 2 years ago, when it was still under construction. It is an old ancient stable completely renovated in a very original way. It is 500m after the last car park in the valley, being part of the national park Gran Paradiso, on the route to Rifugio Vittorio Emannuel. If you look carefully then you can see wild chamois and other animals. Great place to stay (also hotel). The food is really great and Italian. This is one of those special places. Please don't tell anyone ;-)
