We have eaten many times at La Locanda del Pozzo over the years - so when I saw that Antonio had a Trip Advisor sign in the window, knew it was time to write a review. Full disclosure up front - we lived in Avellino for 2.5 years (2006-08) and came back for visits in 2011 and May 2014. When we lived here, we typically ate once a month in La Locanda and brought all of our visitors to La Locanda for lunch. So why is it that we love La Locanda? Two reasons: first, Antonio the proprietor, is one of the most accommodating hosts we have experienced in Italy. He is a retired police Inspector and got into the restaurant business because he has a passion for hosting people and serving them Neapolitan food. Secondly, the cuisine is pure Naples - 8 or 10 courses of appetizers but enhanced by the addition of local cuisine from the mountains and plains surrounding Ospedaletto - followed by pasta and if you can still eat another bite, a fresh meat dish. So technically, typical southern Italian food - but execution and locale are everything. And while every meal we have ever had here was wonderful, no two were ever exactly alike -- and we haven't looked at a menu since our second visit -- Antonio brings us what the land has provided that day. One caution though... If you take on the typical Naples sequence with appetizers, pasta, meat, dessert, and post meal digestivo (green liquor made only in the Monte Vergine area), you won't need to eat for at least 24 hours -- it is a lot of food.In summary, if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Naples for the verdant slopes of Monte Vergine in the middle of Campagnia's wine region (Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino grapes are grown on the slopes leading to Ospedaletto) but still eat a traditional Neapolitan meal, then Antonio's La Locanda del Pozzo is a must stop.

Carlo and Anna know their stuff! A welcoming manner with a verbal recommendation of the day's offerings instead of the usual handing over of the menu. We just ordered one dish each which was excellently executed by the kitchen and were offered complimentary desserts and liqueurs all for a very reasonable price. The locale is small which adds an air of intimacy which I sensed the other regular clients were drawn to, apart from the good food and friendly attention of course. It's right in the town centre, a minute away from the cathedral, so parking isn't guaranteed although a couple of anti-clockwise goes around the block opposite is usually enough to find a spot which is at most three minutes walk back to the restaurant.
