For over 40 years Atticus Bookstore Cafe has been supporting a more connected and thoughtful New Haven. We offer comforting cafe fare and naturally-leavened breads featuring regional ingredients, and an evolving curation of books and gifts.
Average breakfast (variety, ingredients, preparation, presentation and taste) with average service at average value near main Yale campus. Would I dine here again? Probably not. Would I recommend it to others? Yes, if you want something more substantial than Starbucks (nearby) but don't want to walk around for other places.

The food at this restaurant is delicious! It's well-prepared and is served quickly without losing any flavor or freshness. There's a variety of foods for both meat-lovers and vegetarians, as well as unique seasonal specials. The ravioli mushroom dumplings and the vegetarian ramen were really good.

The Book Trader Cafe offers a range of delicious gourmet sandwiches, coffees, and homemade soups & pastries as well as gently used, conservatively priced books for the general or academic reader. Vegan & gluten-free options are available daily.
Book Trader has a decent gluten free menu. I had a sandwich with gluten free bread, which was tasty (you know, sometimes gf bread tastes like cardboard!). The staff behind the counter is very helpful & friendly. You can sit outside in nicer weather, or inside. Sometimes it hard to find a seat because people hang around with their laptops, or their friends! There is one room of used books to mosey thru and purchase if you find something you like. Its a lot of books in a pretty tight space!

Was convinced to go "because its so good". Upstairs looks different and would be an interesting place to get a meal but they were busy and we got seated in the basement. The basement looks and smells like a basement. The restroom has mold from prior leaks on the ceiling. So getting out of the gate this is not what you want to experience when dining out. Strike one.Batting 1,000 but not in a good way. The water glasses came. On the under side of each glass (3 for 3) there was visible mold and dirt. We we're given chop sticks that showed visible signs of usage by others. Thank goodness they also provide forks. When the food came the bowls and spoons were chipped and the outside of my daughter's bowl was unclean. Visually not what one wants to see at any restaurant. Strike two,The food was just OK. Nothing special and no great flavors. The noodles were no better than noodles from the store. Strike three.I'm outta there and won't be back.

On the negatives: It is a mix of Thai, Vietnamese and even Korean (bibimbap) on the menu (never a good sign). Clearly, much of what is cooked is pre prepared and bought frozen. On the positives: Clean and quite nice ambience - although probably not cooked from scratch the food is pretty good. I had the lunchtime special of spicy eggplant with tofu and ate it all. Good location - happy to eat here again.
