Cafe Canto do Cais

On the 1st day of our tour with T4W (awesome 4x4 jeep tour) our guide arranged for us to have a traditional lunch at this restaurant near the sea on the north side of the island in Capelas. He gave us options and told us this was a little adventurous, but had some of the best fish on the island and we loved the idea. The café is basically a small room that looks like on old pub with long picnic style tables where everyone sits together. Our guide told us the owner is a fisherman and they specialize in fish and fruit combinations so that is what we got. It was an extremely large platter of all kinds of fresh grilled fish caught that morning paired with fruit like watermelon, grapes, melon and banana. I’ve never had anything quite like that but it was amazing. The fish was done to perfection on the grill but you will have to go slow and de-bone along the way. We also ordered a jug of their house white wine and it was a perfect combination along with some cheese from Sao Jorge (amazing). We really enjoyed this restaurant, the food and the people. If you are wanting white table clothes and a 5 star experience this is not for you, but if you’re a little adventurous you will love it. This place is highly popular with the locals too which is always a good sign – well worth the trip!

This restaurant and in particular the “Caldo/Mulho de Peixe” was recommended by the owner of Quinta dos Peixes Falantes. And she was right! The dish was very tastfull and the fish was very fresh! It is a family-owned business and the mother is the cook. She is very friendly and cooks delicious! One of her sons, Pedro, works as waiter and speaks English very well. We enjoyed having dinner here and the price is very reasonable. Don’t let you scare off the simple exterior and interior as it is the food what counts. If you stay at Sao Miguel, you should at least have lunch or dinner here!

Restaurante O Pescador

San Miguel is a small island with plenty of fish restaurants. O P is one of the more expensive ones, but not by Canadian standards. One of us had swordfish, the piece covered the length of the plate and my partner had tuna. Both were huge servings, plus a bottle of local wine. Service was friendly and punctual, there was only one other table of guests. The owner was a bit over talkative, to the other table, but friendly enough. So long as you use a GPS you'll find it. Although the restaurant is very close to the shoreline, the kitchen must have the view, presumably it inspires the chef. Definitely recommend it.Thank you very much for your evaluation ...it was a pleasure to serve you ...have nice vacation
