Service was not too great as we had two waitrons and a manager serve us so we werenât sure who was helping us all along. The prego steak roll was awful - it was a thin thin slice of dull bland steak served in a sauce soaked roll which made it soggy to the tough. We sent it straight back. The peri peri chicken and grilled veg was divine though!Their cocktail jars were tasty - we ordered three in total but they were different across the board in taste. The two green drinks (I think it was called a green mamba or green sting) had too much alcohol in the one drink, and not enough in the other - bar needs to make sure their measurements are correct.I would definitely go back though!Hi Micfranmf, Thank you for this very balanced and well-written review. I am sorry to hear that you had a disappointing experience at our store. This is not how we want our customers to experience their time with us. Please will you forward me your contact details so that I may be in touch with you with regards to your trip to Mozambik? My email address is [email protected] regards,Fern

An absolutely superb small, but very up-market seafood restaurant in Umhlanga Rocks, northern suburb of Durban. Fish and seafood fresh daily. One of the best seafood and fish restaurants I have ever been to. Took friends and colleagues there three times i
How refreshingly honest. Just good food and service. This small restaurant is totally unpretentious and prides itself on the freshness and quality of its fare - hence the constant queues, also for take-aways or home cooking. Our waitress knew the menu intimately and could accurately recommend dishes for us. My husband says his generous portion or mussel cracker is the nicest fish he has ever eaten and also really satisfying. I had the red roman which was cooked to perfection. Need to go back for more asap!

Jack Salmon Fish House prides itself in sourcing only the freshest seafood available. This is where exceptional seafood and world class views meet. Truly inspired by the sea!
We joined friends for a meal at Jack Salmon on a Tuesday evening. The place was full at 6:30 and there was a happy, relaxed atmosphere. Service was prompt and friendly. Our table of 5 enjoyed Haloumi starters and salad, then beer battered fish and chips, calamari and superb line fish, Dorado. The portions were generous, fish well prepared and tasty. A very reasonable meal at a local restaurant with a good sea view in the daytime. A good option for a get together with friends.

First time at this establishment and was not disappointed. My colleague and I both ordered fish - I had the Cape Salmon on vegetable noodles which my colleague had the Red Roman. Both were prepared to perfection. Waiter was attentive and the entire atmosphere in the restuarant was great. Tables are not too close to one another. The only slight disappointment was the wine selection.I would recommend this restuarant.

Weâre not usually big fans of hotel restaurants but Ocean Terrace is listed at #7 on Tripadvisorâs list of 114 restaurants in Umhlanga. It had to be worth a try, not least as we were staying at the Oyster Box Hotel where itâs located. Not least as, in addition to their fairly extensive menu, they also have a curry buffet. Now, these can be tricky. Buffets are rarely top quality food but South Asian food seems to stand up to it better than some other cuisines. Here, itâs done very well. The buffet was lacking starters so it was straight in to the main courses. There were about 10 dishes on offer â a good mix of vegetarian and non-veggie. Between the two of us, we managed to sample most of them â yes, one of us went back for extensive seconds having already had extensive firsts. Stand-outs were the âtraditional Durban lamb curryâ (tender meat, well rounded sauce), a butter bean curry, mixed vegetable curry (veg still retaining a little bite â not always a given with Asian food) and daal (a good chilli kick here)There was a vast range of things to go with your curries â raitas, pickles, chutneys. And several bowls of dried fruit â apricots, raisins , etc â which were very reminiscent of Indian meals in the UK when folk started to eat it back in the 1970s. But the retro touch was nice. Rice, not pilau and palin boiled, was good with fluffy separate grains. And thereâs chapattis and poppadums â the latter a bit greasy and not quite crisp enough. The buffet includes a pick from the three dessert items available. There was alovely almond kulfi and, served warm, a vermicelli pudding. I think the latter is a South African spin on the usually cold falooda. Good dinner!.

Ile Maurice Restaurant offers Mauritian, French and Island Creole food in a relaxed and elegant atmosphere.
We visited the restaurant for our anniversary dinner and was extremly dissatisfied with the overall taste experience... The flavour of our meals did not match the price point.. The meals are generous in quantity and fresh, but tasteless. The setting is nothing special.. Feels as though u are sitting in your aunts dinning room... The positives was our waiter who was knowledgeable and friendly and we were given a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. We however will not be returning for the food or setting. Very Sorry for you and of course tastes, colors and looks are all very personal opinions. We are very fortunate that 99% of our guests do not think the same. However, Thank you however for your visit.

Grill Room at the Oyster Box Hotel.
Thereâs an old fashioned elegance to the Grill Room â the chandelier, the starched linen, the waiters dressed in their very retro uniforms. Even the menu includes what you wished were more universal timeless classics. One was something definitely out of fashion in the UK â an hors dâoeuvres trolley. We couldnât recall seeing one in the last 40 years â it was a meal with my father (and he died in 1975). We did remember how good they were. And this was an absolute cracker. There must have been at least 20 different salads, meats and seafood to choose from. Another retro things was the sorbet that arrived next â lychee and pineapple, although both flavours were very muted. We followed that with another classic â chateaubriand â one of the items on the âGueridon trolley serviceâ section of the menu. Itâs an enormous piece of meat, accurately cooked as requested and carved and plated at the table. Thereâs a bit of showmanship, with brandy being poured over and flamed before carving. And thereâs an array of vegetables to go with it â asparagus, courgette, carrot, cauliflower, broccoli and baby sweetcorn. And a very well made potato dauphinoise. And some pan juices to drizzle over and an excellent béarnaise sauce. This had been a lot of food and only one of us felt they had room for dessert. The menu described it as âcaramel apple sphereâ. This was disappointing, with no real flavour of caramel and precious little of apple. Nor was it a sphere, unless they meant the blob of ice cream. This could have been good if only there had been a good twang from apple and richness from caramel but this just tasted of a generic sweetness. It all made me later wonder if Iâd actually been served the dessert Iâd ordered.Service was generally good but there was a quibble. The Grill Room is one of the places where, if you order a bottle of water, they donât leave it on the table. Now, thatâs OK if the waiters are âon the ballâ and top up your glass regularly. That didnât happen here and we had to keep asking for the bottle. And the second bottle we ordered, while still eating the main course, didnât arrive until after weâd finished eating dessert.

We went to dinner last night and the restaurant was not full. After being seated for 5/8 minutes a manager asks if i was helped. No was my reply..She very helpfully took drinks and starter order. Still no sign of our waitress though. Our waitress eventually arrives with drink does not introduce herself or wear a name badge. My partner then joins me and he sits a good few minutes before he attracted the attention of a manager to help take his drink order. He then summons another waitress to help us.In the interim a few waitresses are very merrily having a conversation in the front. My point is restaurant was NOT full to capacity and service was pathetic. No one checked if meal was ok ? Are You guys alright?Need anything else?Scary to think how they would cope during peak seasons.Dear SharonN123, Thank you for rating John Dory's.
