Things to do in Syria
The Sea Cities Restaurant is located on the second floor of the Cattan Hotel in Damascus Syria. They have a lift or you can use the staircase and when you arrive you are greeted by one of the waiters or Manager of the restaurant. On your left side you always have the fresh fish displayed on ice. Your fish order is taken before you sit down, and of course you have many different cooking methods to select from. My favorite is the grilled, as they use fresh charcoal, which adds a lot to the taste! When you then enter the restaurant the first thing you notice is the entire wall is made up of windows, giving you a great view of the Victory Bridge area of Damascus. The waited then takes you drinks order, I especially like the Syrian "local" wine called "Al Bazan' from the Southern Region of Suwayda. All the window tables are for four, but our party was six and still we had a nice view one roll back! The mezzah (or starters) is tops as all the salads and vegetables are very fresh. What I like is that they give you time to complete your appetizers before they bring in your fresh fish. Many restaurants in Lebanon and Syria do exactly the opposite which really turns me off!!The fresh fish is tops. They cook it so well you don't want to stop eating! Finally the service is impeccable from the head waiter down to the busboys. Even the manager stops by to make sure everything is OK.They bring you a nice towelette for your fingers and then most surprising they bring you a table full of deserts, including the local sweets and fresh seasonal fruits, on the house! The prices are really reasonable so when you leave you never have any regrets!!

For the best Fresh Fish in all of Damascus you must try the Sarghous Restaurant. It is located near Najmeh Square facing the entrance of the Orient Club. I do believe the old name was called âOceansâ. You enter the restaurant by descending a few stairs and the restaurant is very quaint and has an international décor. When you enter you have a cooler display on your right side that displays all the fresh fish, very European!! The manager mentioned that they bring the fresh fish daily from the Syrian port city of Latakia. You can select from a nice variety of fresh fish and shrimp, prior to sitting down at your table. We started with a few very tasty salads and then many, many appetizers. I highly recommend the oven roasted eggplant which is simply served on a platter and split open with itsâ top stem intact!! The shrimp and rice were great as was the small fried Sultan Brahmin or Red Grouper. They even have a great Sashimi served with all condimentsâ found in a great Japanese Restaurant. The only disappointment was the deep fried Calamari, which had a bit too much batter. The âhome-madeâ Tartar Sauce was really good. Finally, something you must not forget are to order the fried potatoesâ¦they were to âdie forââ¦Our entree was a great White Fish which was de-boned and was extremely tasty. They have a full menu of drinks and cocktails and the wine list had a bounty of white wines!! The best seemed to be a nice Lebanese Chardonnay. The service was tops and at times their appeared to be more servers than restaurant guest!!So for the best fresh fish in Damascus you must try the Sarghous Restaurant!!
