Welcome to Pisces Rising. Located in Central Florida and established in 2003, Pisces Rising is a celebration of Florida cuisine. Lovingly wrapped around a Florida cracker bungalow style home built in the 1920's, the restaurant overlooks Lake Dora and the
good bar atmosphere on the deck. We went for an afternoon lunch but there was no dining room seating until 5 PM. ended up having drinks and appetizers on the deck. Good eats and cocktails although service was a little slow and waitstaff did not seemed very interested in getting to us when we arrived. Not sure if that is the norm but it was notable for me. I would go back but if service was not better it would be my last visit as there are lots of good restaurants in Mt. Dora.

The Whales Tale website and other reviews gave us the impression (my mistake) that it was a much larger establishment. Somewhere along the way we missed that is was in the middle of a somewhat rundown (appearing) strip mall. We drove by it twice before finally connecting the Fish House sign closest to the road to Whales Tale. From the reviews I expected a large crowd at lunch time but there were maybe a half dozen cars in the parking area in front. We were able to seat right away and the service/waitstaff were very good. Took the drink order right away and we never had to ask for refills as she was always one step ahead. We ordered the New England style clam chowder for starters which came out fairly quickly. Everyone has their special tastes and clearly this chowder has pleased others. It was good, a bit thin for our tastes and had an interesting tang in the background. Decent amount of clam, all fairly small bits and pieces and the diced potatoes were not overwhelming the chowder. The salt and pepper shakers were the tiny ones that you find on airlines and we had to check to see if they were even delivering by shaking into our palm. Lots of shaking required! As Whales Tale is fairly small and probably does not have much room for dish washing, the drinks and chowder were in styrofoam containers. The tableware was metal however which was appreciated over the potentially plastic. We ordered the fried shrimp basket since that our main reason to go out for seafood. Sides were onion rings, coleslaw and the sweet onion hush-puppies. The batter for the shrimp and onion rings was really pretty good. The onion rings broke perfectly when bitten - they have that right. Hush-puppies were a bit bland and I never found any onion bits in them - fair. Shrimp were good, plenty to the serving and if we are being really really picky perhaps a tiny bit overcooked but absolutely good and a far cry better than 99% of other seafood establishments. Seriously, the shrimp were good and the batter did not overpower their delicate taste.Service was excellent throughout the meal.Is it the best seafood in Central Florida, in our opinion no, but it is in the top 5 and if we were passing through Mt. Dora and had a desire for seafood, would not hesitate to eat there again. We would probably try another appetizer instead of the chowder since it didn't really hit high notes for us, but again, from the reviews it has pleased others and we would not argue that point. The value was a bit off-putting considering the styrofoam presentation. Final verdict - a solid seafood restaurant that should please many.

Tony's Chowder House at 622 N. Donnelly St. in Historic downtown Mount Dora, Fl. opened in February 2019. The structure was built in the 1920's as a residential house. Today it's a very small nautically themed 12 table tribute restaurant. Back in 1950-198
My family and I were in the area antique shopping and wanted to get a late lunch. We drove by this place and saw their sign for lunch specials. So we decided to just head in and give it a try. We were not disappointed. The food was delicious and piping hot. You could tell everything was fresh and not frozen. Our waiter, Bill, was so nice and very attentive. He even chatted with us about the old pictures on the wall, which I really enjoyed. The lunch specials were a great deal! We had fried fish, chicken tenders, a chicken sandwich, and some of their famous chowder. All very yummy!

I had the crabby patty and it was a huge portion of lump crabmeat that was cooked perfectly. The side of onion rings was amazing and a regular side, not a premium side. The menu has vegetarian, gluten free and vegan and has a large selection.
