Not been to Whitehaven before so choosing a great fish and chips lunch was difficult but at Fraser's it was a good one Food was excellent and the staff very friendly. Good price as well. Very clean restaurant.Need to walk through the town so was lucky to have found it. Would definitely go there again.32 Tangier street Whitehaven.
For many years, there has only been one main chippy in Whitehaven that everyone seems tp go to, me included, however following a recent not too great experience there, I decided to explore the other offerings available.Chris's in in the Market Place, and I'm not sure why have never tried it before. Creature of habit I guess. Visited for take-away on the Saturday before Christmas, and got parked fairly easily outside. There was a pretty good menu, and I noticed a sign saying that it had been voted Chippy of the Year by a local group.I ordered my usual fish and chips, which was cheaper than other nearby shops. The fish was white, thick and juicy. The batter was very light, and crispy. Chips were well cooked, dry and crispy. A very generous portion. Thought it was great that they do various sizes of portion as well. All in all I was well impressed, and think that the current main chippy in the town should be a but worried by this heir apparent.

This is a character listed property of over 400 year old that has recently undergone a major re-furbishment. With a new commercial kitchen, contemporary style furniture, restored original wooden flooring from the deck of a ship and hand painted murals, th
Such a shame. They appear to have an aversion to changing the cooking oil. Hence all food appears brown and burnt. The chips are hand cut and would be top notch if not for the appearance, likewise the fish, great quality...cooked in nasty oil. Mushy peas lovely. Tartare sauce requested...served mayonnaise! No bread and butter available so given a roll and spread. The lady serving/cooking was very nice but this place needs an update on both menu (no veggie options in this day and age is a bit sad) and cooking methods. It's a lovely old building with a lot of charm and character. Just needs a few tweaks....and I hope they happen soon or they may go the way of all other businesses that don't recognise their easily fixable failings.
