It would be easy to pass Fatbacks without realizing it, sandwiched between hotels and fast foods. Glad we did not miss it. The interior is pretty unassuming, tables and counter space. We were here for a late lunch, so was not crowded (lunch specials end at 2 pm).Unique menu including something called "road kill stew" (which the waitress shared was pulled pork, potatoes, celery, spices, etc. which sounded a lot better than the name implied). We stuck to the more traditional items, one os us having flounder basket and the other having the shrimp basket. Sides were cole slaw, baked beans and hush puppies. Both of us were very pleased. The fried seafood was well-prepared, not greasy, and the hushpuppies were also quite good...the kind with kernels of corn inside. Ditto for the slaw and beans. We had the banana pudding and coconut cream pie for dessert. The banana pudding was okay; the coconut cream pie was excellent.Service was great! Would definitely return to try some of the specials.

Visited on a Tuesday evening, dining room half full. Ordered two entrees in the $27 range. Service was slow to start and got worse. Served biscuits that had sat too long by the servers on admission, dry and crusty. salads arrived with drinks and biscuits. Entrees were served by another server. My baked potato was COLD, my lobster was cooked to a dessicated state and wouldn't come out of the shell. Server finally came back 10 minutes later, she did bring another potato. Never offered a drink refill until the meal was over. Past experiences here have been mixed, but this will be the last visit. It seems that no one cares, ESPECIALLY MANAGEMENT. either they know and dobn't care or incompetent.

My wife and I visited Crab Creek from Smith Mountain Lake. We are originally from New England and will drive miles for a good seafood restaurant (that won't send us to the poor farm). It appears that either people in SW Virginia don't know what good seafood is, or they are willing to put up with whatever is offered just to get it.Crab Creek has a long way to go to meet the grade. Perhaps they could do with a little advice. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived and were immediately seated. I had the feeling though that we were interrupting whatever the server had been doing and she was irritated about it. It was only toward the end of the meal when I was trying to get her to at least smile that she warmed up a bit.As for the food, mmmm, not that good. My wife and I both had a fried scallop and oyster combination plate. The scallops were tiny bay scallops, they are fine if properly cooked, but overdone they are like eating flavorless pencil erasers. The oysters were just few and also overdone. There were a few other couples arriving as we left, and we were there for an early dinner, but the dinner crowd was very, very small. I was just shy of giving Crab Creek a poor rating, but they made a Jambalaya that was quite good and that somewhat redeemed them.
