A casual dining experience is what Schafer's is all about. Located just south of Bigfork at the top of Woods Bay, overlooking Flathead Lake, the restaurant sparkles with views and warmth offering a dining experience unsurpassed in the Flathead Valley. A f
After reading the reviews, I had high expectations for dinner at Shaferâs in the Mountain Lake Lodge. My expectations were exceeded. The ambiance, the food, and the service were all outstanding. The ambiance is unique. It is both swanky and relaxed. Swanky? Yes. Linen table cloths, fresh flowers on the table, quiet, things like a baguette that had a crispy crust and a warm soft interior. More like a Parisian baguette than an American baguette. And yet it was very relaxed, not snobbish at all. It had that warm, friendly Montana vibe. That must be a difficult combination to achieve but they do it well. We were welcomed and seated by Toby. We started with an aperitif. Prosecco for my wife and a Martini for me. I asked our server, Jonathan, for an icy cold Martini. You could hear him shaking it and shaking it. It came a bit cloudy from the aeration and with tiny shards of ice floating on the top. Perfect. The well gin is Bombay. We came for the prime rib, served only on Thursdays. My wife and I always split a dinner. I asked if we could get two, full, half thick slices rather than one slice halved crosswise. They did so without question. The prime rib was perfectly cooked medium rare and came with delicious garlic mashed potatoes with a sour cream and chives (yes chive, not green onion tops). A vegetable melange of yellow beans, green beans, and carrots was also perfectly cooked and simply dressed with butter and finely chopped dill. A slightly thickened au jus was delicious. We both got identical plates. For dessert we opted for the huckleberry lemon cheesecake. So good. This was just an outstanding meal at an outstanding restaurant. One of the other reviewers thought it was pricy. For the quality of this level, I think the prices are very reasonable.
Woods Bay Wine features wines and cuisine of the world with an emphasis on Seafood, Wine Tastings, and Belgian Beer. Retail Bottle Shop with a wide selection of old world wines and Belgain Beer.
Visited twice during our stay and David and the staff where very professional and friendly. He has a great smile and very knowledgeable about the wines he has chosen. They have a limited entree menu but the offerings were tasty.
We offer American cuisine, an extensive wine selection and full bar. The original 1960's menu offers a great selection of your favorite standards. These include hand cut beef, extremely large portions of prawns, crab, lobster and barbeque ribs.
We went there while visiting Bigfork. The waitress was friendly and did a great job. The food was good ( burgers, and salmon fish and chip/salads). What was horrible was when the bill came to the table. We asked for a itemized bill because it seemed high for what we had ordered. The waitress brought one back and we discovered they were adding things (up charges, bread cost, and wine we never ordered). When my wife had ordered the salmon fish and chips, she asked instead of FF's could she just ave a salad. She was told yes but there would be an up charge and she agreed. The up charge was $4.15!!! WOW. The waitress took our drink order and came back to the table with bread and our drinks. Turns out they charge $2.50 for the bread. Sneaky sale and not worth it in my opinion. We were also charged for an extra glass of wine that was never ordered or served ($9). This is the best part!!! We went inside and started to question the bill and the bartender went crazy. He was saying we ordered the bread and the wine. We corrected him and he just keep going off about how someone asked for the bread and ordered the wine, which I don't know how he knew that since we sat outside and he was inside behind the bar all of the time. Even after the waitress came to the bar and confirmed nothing he said was true he kept insisting that we did. Finally another gentleman stepped in and made him refund the wine $'s. The up charge was excessive but we were told there would be one and I was not going to argue with the rude bartender about the bread charge($2.50). We won't be back and advise everyone that goes to be aware of what your being charged for and not getting.
