The Chichester Arms is a traditional 15th century thatched inn and has been the hub of village life in Bishops Tawton since 1880AD. Our idea of pub food is not fussy gastronomy; it's proper "Man food" prepared and cooked here at The Chichester Arms by mys
Lovely pub in a lovely location. The staff were friendly and the meal was amazing. Portions were really big my husband couldn't finish his steak and ale pie! Worth a visit, value for money definatly worth a visit

Because we live locally we could be classed as biased however we have tried many fish and chips throughout the country but none can beat the Pelican. Lovely restaurant and friendly service which is also very quick even in the busy times. Recommend that you book because if you donât youâll miss the chance to sample the best.

Been coming here for years, always have the light bites meal size. Today the chips were very sad and overcooked although the cod was delicious. Told where to sit on arrival, no choice despite various empty tables, husband complained of a draught throughout meal. Not very impressed this time.

We (family ages from 9 to 82) enjoyed a fabulous meal for my slightly belated 50th. I wanted to do something a bit different than an evening pub meal and this place fitted the bill perfectly! Very glamourous setting and nice bar with sofas to have a pre dinner drink in. Expecting minute but perfectly presented courses we all tucked into the rolls with gusto, but we were all very pleasantly surprised to find full-sized but perfectly presented courses! Some of us didn't quite finish we were so full, and we're not usually incapable of scraping a plate. So go expecting normal portions, you won't need to top it up with a McDonalds afterwards, that's for sure. Another big hit was Steve, who kept the kids amused teasing them, especially the youngest. It created a lovely comfortable non-pretentious atmosphere but in an otherwise glamourous restaurant which just fitted the bill perfectly for my special occasion. We topped it off with non-alcoholic cocktails and grown-up cocktails made perfectly by Andrea. We will definitely be returning & not waiting for a special birthday next time! Thank you all.

My wife and I have visited the Silver Cod several times before and found it OK. Sadly, this was not the case on our latest visit. When we arrived, the restaurant was virtually empty with just a couple of unsavory, somewhat scruffy, diners at the front. We decided to eat further back - mid-restaurant. We were immediately ponced upon by a waitress who insisted that we move forward as there were only two waitresses on that day and they did not want to do extra cleaning (???).We should have walked out at that point, but instead we moved forward two tables - which the waitress found acceptable. We each ordered a fish supper (Cod, chips, mushy peas, a slice of bread and a mug of tea). The food was nice - no complaints - and at (I think) £8.95 per head, reasonable value for Barnstaple. True, it was the first time we had eaten steamed baked white bread in years, but I suppose this is par for the course in most Fish & Chips Restaurants. There were no condiments on the table other than salt and vinegar, and we were rationed to one sachet of tartar sauce each.We were largely ignored by the waitress for the rest of our visit. The atmosphere in the restaurant was completely dead, and despite the acceptable meal, we felt very uncomfortable there.Home sick Glaswegian exiles might like to note that the Silver Cod is the refuge in Barnstaple for the battered, deep fried, Mars Bar.My advice to visitors to Barnstaple is to avoid the Silver Cod. It is not a good advertisement for the town. There other Fish and Chip Restaurants, a short walk away, is are much better alternatives.Hello thank you for taking the time to review my business Iâm sorry that your experience in the restaurant was not to your liking I believe that your visit was a nice sunny day which unfortunately made the restaurant quiet which I would agree is difficult to create an atmosphere when empty. As for the customers in the restaurant we serve a variety of people inc quite a few celebrities all are welcome however we will not tolerate bad behaviour of any kind and had we been aware of them causing you any problems we wouldâve been happy to intervene we do not have a bad reputation as a rough shop. Iâm glad that your meal was to your liking the reason that only one sauce was offered was as you state our prices are extremely cheap therefore we cannot offer all the thrills as well but we do buy top brands not cheap alternatives. I do not understand why you were not allowed to sit where you wanted and will take this up with the staff on duty.
