I Portici

We normally only visit Taggia in the winter months, so we weren't aware that this restaurant had outside seating in the summer which made for a very pleasant atmosphere in the old town.Service was very good from friendly waiting staff, with our waiter speaking quite good English. We had a mixture of dishes including pasta, pizzas and fritto misto and they were all excellent, as was the creme brulee which the waiter said he would use the blowtorch himself to ensure it was crunchy on top and indeed it was.No idea of the overall cost as our friends paid, but the prices on the menu looked reasonable for the quality of the food and the setting. The menu (apart from pizzas) was quite small which I always think is a good thing, but there were some delicious dishes of the day on offer. Altogether an excellent evening and we'll be going back.

Ristorante Playa Manola

Last night my wife, two adult children and I ate at Playa Manola, and the evening was enchanting, in every sense. The owner, Ivan, greeted us at the door, and offered us a glass of Franciacorta to begin the evening. Ivan is a bit of a local legend in the Argentina valley-- successful businessman, politician (vice mayor) and all-around mr. fix-it guy, his passion is preserving and exalting local traditions, and high on the list for him is food and wine. After the aperitivo, Ivan chose a Vermentino produced just a few kilometers away, and it was light and refreshing. Ivan just opened the restaurant two weeks ago, and the newly designed interior, with sweet views overlooking the mediterranean, is the perfect locale for an exquisite seafood restaurant. We decided to try the "degustazione" plate of antipasti, which included "brandacuiun," an ancient Ligurian dish of salt cod, with a terrific explanation of the origins of both the word and the dish. My son, who was intimidated by the sound of it, after eating it, said he could live on it alone. the sardines with zucchini and the carpaccio of Palamita (a mediterranean relative of Bonito) were equally delightful. As there are four primo piatti on the menu and four of us, we each chose a different one and shared with each other. Each of us thought we had each chose best, though as I'm writing this review, I'll speak about the zuppa di pesce with fresh thyme sprinkled toasted bread produced high in the valley above, which I ordered. I've simply never tasted a more complex yet subtle fish soup.We were surprisingly full after the primi, so my wife ordered one portion of the ftittura of anchovies and shrimp, with chick pea fries. Very tasty. We ordered three deserts, and while the white chocolate soup was superb, and my son's semifreddo with grated orange peal and Gran Marnier was excellent, the chocolate souffle with orange sorbet my daughter ordered was unforgetable. We left Ivan and the Playa Manarola for an evening passegiata, with full bellies, light spirits, and fond memories.

You have to know this place, it's in the middle of the town not on seaside, no scenic view. But what a food and service! Good selection of local wines do not forget ( white) Pigato. We got a wonderful Spaghetti with Totani (baby squid) and Branzino (sea bass familiy) alla ligure with olives. You can mix seafood with Porcini mushrooms in very delicate and unusual combinations. For dessert have a trip with Chestnut ice cream.Very small place booking essential.

Always a must when visiting the family down here. Seafood is a favourite: mixed platters as a starter are definitely recommended and very large. Spaghetti allo scoglio come with plenty of seafood. Fried calamari and prawns never disappoint, while ask for the catch of the day to be cooked in the oven.

Our fellow Tripadvisor diners are on target. This is a very pleasant, simple and satisfying place to dine without pretension. When I am home in New England, I dream of finding that perfect Ligurian osteria/trattoria which checks all the boxes: the freshest seafood; a little creativity in the kitchen, warm and welcoming service, a good wine cellar, a nice view and either a long history or a newer place true to tradition, perhaps kicking it up a notch. From my four circle rating, you can tell this isn't quite that ideal, but it is certainly worth putting on your reliable list. The restaurant's website is either a work in progress, or content with just leaving you with a general impression. Instead of a menu, they show you pictures of some fresh crustaceans. The old beach view implies this has been a restaurant going back to 1808. That might be true, or not. The current restaurant is small, modern and close to the beach. No history is given on the web and the interior certainly doesn't evoke two centuries io tradition. The brown and white checked table cloths, small paper napkins and tinware fall well into the osteria category. What you get is simple, fine quality, but completely unadorned. We started with the local, San Remo gamberi, raw, marinated with a dash of lemon. Quite good, but a little austere for my taste. The fried calamari was nicely prepared, but we have had better. The local artichoke salad, though, was exceptional. As one other diner commented, I couldn't get a rational explanation why there were no bottles of Pigato or Vermentino. We settled for a decent white from Alto Adige while we would have preferred to drink Ligurian wine. The home made desserts were quite good, and the home made biscotti and their cafe were superb. Our waiter was conscientious but spoke less English than I do Italian. No problem, it is after all his country. We got along fine although if we were both a little more adept we might have wound up with the pasta course we had in mind rather than the appetizer.Worth a trip to Taggia? No. But if you are in the area, a place to seriously consider. The beach promenade has been torn up for quite awhile. A construction poster says work was to start in October, 2011 and be done in 235 days. But this is Italy. It might be another year..or two. IT doesn't help access to the restaurant or the view.

We found this place by chance as we cycled along the track from Sanremo and it's just a slight diversion off at Bussana before Riva Ligure. It was October so you couldn't eat outside and that must be an added bonus in the summer. We were welcomed by the two young ladies and decided to have the full menu at lunch time ( as we could cycle some of the calories off afterwards!). There's no written menu as they just prepare what is fresh that day and no choice but for fish lovers like us that wasn't a problem and we cleaned our plates! We had Ligurian squid with potatoes and peas, brandajcun- another local dish of fish mixed with potatoes, mussels, a filet of fish with olives and tomatoes. The first course was unusual and delicious of gnocchi with a fish and herb sauce with clams, the second was grilled prawns, followed by a choice of dessert, all accompanied by the house wine ( the white is fizzy like proseeco and accompanies the fish well), a choice of dessert, coffee and liquers. The service was efficient and friendly and the atmoshpere homely. Thoroughly enjoyable and the quality of everything was way above many restaurants in the area. Bravi. If you're in the area and enjoy cycling I recommend trying this path (you can hire bikes at the start and end of route and several places in the middle) and stopping for lunch at this place.

Positioned in front of the sea, the Restaurant provides consistently fantastic food, with dishes based on freshly caught fish and other sea produce. All ingredients are sourced from local producers and the level of quality is extremely high. The tasting menu, with each dish accompanied by a select oil from a local small producer represents truly exceptional value (65 euros per person, seven courses, including a wine selected by the owner. The equivalent meal - should you find it - in Milan would set you back 3 times as much).I wholeheartedly recommend the place if you are in the area (and it is definitely worthwhile a drive to get there). Only - minor - issue is a lack of parking.

I have had lunch here 3 times in the last couple of months. Each time, I have received a friendly service and a small glass of prosecco as an aperitif. Great olive oil and bread. Lovely dishes - fresh, homemade and delicious. The menu is only in Italian, and for lunch I only saw local people coming here. Great! I haven't tried the pizza yet- as it's only served for dinner. You can easily reach the restaurant if you take the bike path - a small detour to Bussana beach will get you there. Only negative: the restaurant is situated on a small street with a little bit of traffic - and has only very little outside space. If you like orange - it's a plus :-)
