Visit Helnæs or Helnaes, on the approach causeway (2km) to the island you drive over a small dike where it is very windy. On the Lillebaelt side you have lots of wave action but on the Fynen side you have a quiet lagoon with no waves but with lots of wind which is a favourite for windsurfers, paragliders, and folks who like todo tricks on boards. Arriving on the green island you note immediately the small roads, and the old fashion houses, and an old lighthouse.. The atmosphere is like old Denmark, quiet and villageish, serene, and no stress. The Old Inn (kro) is well worth a special trip, white linen, super service, good local food. However they are FAMOUS for their Fried Eel. Fresh local black Eel is made only the way the danes can do, with steamed spinach and cremed potatoes. For Eel lovers, this place is like coming to heaven, and the kro is just one of a very few places which make it right. The island and the kro is highly recommended for those who seek peace and tranquility in an old country atmosphere which is rapidly disappearing in Denmark. On the way visit some of the old palace estates, (slot) eat openfaced sandwiches from small stores along the road.Call them first to ensure they got fresh eel on the day you want to visit ...[---]

We visited Faaborg in early September just at the end of the summer season, so not so many restaurants are open. This restaurant was busy and although the kitchen and waiting staff were under pressure, they were still friendly and efficient. There is a short menu and having seen that most people were ordering burgers, we did the same.My wife gad a breadcrumbed fried fish fillet and I enjoyed the Mexican spicy version. Both were extremely well cooked and ingredients were of a high standard with excellent fries, dill flavoured mayo and crispy bun.Not high end food, but enjoyable and by Danish standard reasonably God value for money. On the recommendation of a Dane from Copenhagen that spends his holidays in Faaborg, we had dinner at the Hotel Faergegaarden, on the edge of the old town facing the harbor. It was an excellent choice, one of our best meals in Denmark. They have a prix fix gourmet menu with 2 - 4 courses (you choose). We went for three. The appetizer was asparagus with shrimp in a Remoularde sauce. Excellent. It was followed by a filet of veal in a wonderful pepper sauce. Superb. We had a very nice red Italian wine to go with it and we finished it off with a generous and interesting cheese plate. The service was friendly, informed and responsive. The room is dignified (without being stuffy), attractive and comfortable. If weâd had any appetite left weâd have gone for a dessert, but, alas, we were stuffed. Overall, it was dining at its best.
