We were staying at Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel West Building, and this restaurant is towards Ichinose, which is the village nearby. From the hotel it was about a 10 minute walk, there is a shuttle bus into town in the evenings but it was relatively infrequent. The restaurant staff were very helpful and spoke English well. The restaurant is actually run by the Shiga Kogen brewery (I believe) so had all of their beers available on tap, plus a guest beer. They also have a large selection of sake and server gluhwein! The food was amazing, I had great Japanese BBQ Pork, and everyone around the resort was raving about their desserts - Gorgonzola Cheesecake! One of the nights we did the night skiing in the Ichinose Family Ski Area, and we came to Teppa Room for an early dinner, hit the slope, then came back afterwards for some drinks and dessert. If you're staying near Ichinose or at Prince Hotel and want a great meal with fantastic beer, definitely stop here one night. We went twice!
Izakaya Chokkun is a very nice place to have some snacks and some beers in Shibu Onsen. My friends and I visited in March 2018, right around the time of the Spring Equinox. The first bar we attempted to visit in Shibu Onsen was closed, so we strolled over to Izakaya Chokkun. We thought that it was closed too, because when we opened the door, it was pitch black inside, but we heard a rustling coming from the back and we were quickly and warmly welcomed by a woman who turned on the lights, turned on some heaters and music, and served us all beers. She asked us if we'd eaten dinner, and we said yes, because we'd just enjoyed a 13-course dinner at our ryokan. Nonetheless, an older gentleman ambled out of the back room, said a quick hello in one of the deepest and most gravelly voices that I've ever heard, and then got to work in the kitchen. He prepared some veggies for us, and then some fried tofu, which were both delicious bar snacks. Then he prepared an entire fried fish, which was entirely too much food, but was possibly one of my single favorite dishes during my entire trip to Japan. Eventually, we had to tell them to stop bringing us food! But the best part of our visit was the conversation with the bartender and The Master. I'd strongly recommend dropping by if you're in Shibu Onsen. And keep an eye out for my Polaroid on the wall!
You can enjoy local beef steak and sukiyaki, soba noodle, rice kamameshi, there are various other Japanese foods. You can also taste Japanese sake.
If you plan to visit the Snow Monkey Park, Hotaru-tei is a great choice for lunch. The restaurant is located between the walk route to the park entrance from the bus stop. It is about a 3 mins walk from the bus stop. This is the bus stop for the bus to/from Nagano station. Lovely architecture, nice spacious interior with a modern reception area. The food is good. Lunch set is ¥2,800~ . I had a slow lunch and comfortably timed my departure back to Nagano.

We came upon this place after a hard day's travel and feeling very hungry. It was a bright spot in a quiet town. The Western food including the pizza was OK and the staff really friendly. Other dishes tried were the salmon salad and fried chicken. The latter not quite so nice but worked for the accompanying teenager. Plenty of choice for drinks from the cocktail. Overall it was good for what it was.

Koishiya is an actually hotel. (More like hostel with shared bathroom)I first booked this hotel but my parents wanted bathroom equiped in hotel, therefore I had to choose another hotel but I wanted to try cafe at least. (This hotel doesn't have hot spring, check their website closely)Although this is hotel (hostel), cafe is not open between lunch and dinner. What a shame ! Dinner is open from 1800 only. One of the staff here seems like having walking tour in English, it must be fun. I would have gone honestly !As I had already eaten Soba nearby, I stopped by here just for a glass of red wine, which is produced somewhere in Nagano prefecture. To my surprise, it wasn't bad ! I checked their menu, I honestly wanted to eat something, everything looks so unique and intriguing. They use special product from Nagano pref.Space is very cosy. If you stay over night here, most likely you will eat here and meet other guests in the restrant area. I admit that it is a very friendly place with lots of decoration.A staff showed me the shared bathroom on the ground level, it is really just shared bathroom with shower cubicle, don't expect any Japanese styled bathroom. Great thing about Koishiya is they accept credit card :)

Stopped in for lunch after visiting the monkeys. Much prefer this place. The food, beer and atmosphere are great. We had the dumplings, cucumbers, beef stew and best of all, the gorgonzola cheese cake. Who would have thought? Small portion but excellent. So was the affagado. The craft beer was very good as well. All this for Y5,000. Good service We will come back.
