This place has hands down been my favorite place to eat while staying in Japan for 2 weeks. The staff of two has been exceptional. From an enthusiastic greeting when I entered, to their interest in my travels. Iâll say, I am a white American male traveling solo and with tattoos. As polite as Iâve tried to be (and speaking as much Japanese as I can) I have been turned away at a few places due to either being foreign or having tattoos. Hida Takayama Gyoza Souhonzan made me feel so welcome. They even broke out some funny hats, we took silly photos, and I drew a picture which they already had up on the wall when I came back again for a second visit. Finally, I havenât mentioned the food. This is the best gyoza Iâve ever had. On my first visit I tried the Hida beef and the spinach, and on the second I tried the fried Hida beef. This will be something I miss when I go back home. I know Iâll be left craving this when I leave, but I canât recommend it enough.é«å±±æ»å¨ä¸ãï¼åããæ¥åºããã ãèª ã«æãé£ããããã¾ãããè¨èã®å£ãæãããã¨ãªãã楽ããæéãå ±æã§ãããã¨ãå¬ããæãã¾ããæãã¦ããã ããã¤ã©ã¹ããç´ æ´ãããã§ããæ¬å½ã«ãããã¨ããããã¾ããï¼ï¼ï¼

Desolation Row is a rock bar in Takayama. You will get great rock music and a big choice in whisky and beer.
Choose from thousands of vinyls, mainly 60s to 90s, barman is extremely knowledgable on music and acts as DJ. Great chance to check out some Japanese whisky, very cosy atmosphere, but above all the owner is a real character, speaks English, and fascinating to talk to. Best night out in town.

Nice and cosy place to have a drink; great atmosphere. The owner was so kind and cheerful. There were some notebooks on the table, that people from all over the world used to write or draw in. Itâs nice to look through those books and read all the messages.

We stumbled across this small bar on a cold night. Has English speaking host and you sit around the bar and can try different sake (and other drinks). We had sample tasting of four different local sake and also ate the okonomiyaki which was quite nice. Probably the most western place we have been in on our trip- just westerners when we were there.

Closed on every Sunday and alternate Mondays. Business day can be changed, please check our facebook page for our business day.
You can have some locally inspired cocktails, sake and beer. The barman is also creatively mixing according to your wishes.I guess because of trip advisor it is kind of an exclusive expat and tourist place, almost no locals go here.

This is a shop that you can enjoy Japanese and Western cuisine made just right in front of you while talking in English and German. The contents are slightly different at lunch and dinner. The main of lunch time will be set menu of about 1000 yen. We may
Our dinner (food and experience) at Sakurajaya was fantastic! It is a small operation (the chef and his mother, who is serving guests, seem to be the "staff"), away from the Takayama touristy center. We made a reservation (a must) and had a most memorable meal! We chose omakase (dishes selected by the chef) - if you do, you have to choose one protein. We, of course chose the famous Hida beef. The flavours, presentation and service were outstanding. We had a yummy beef salad, corn fritters, lots of seared beef, dishes kept on coming one tastier than the other. The whole experience is memorable, you will remember the cute mother, pushing her cart around and serving the tables and the chef focused on his craft running the show. The mother kindly commented on our son's basic Japanese saying "oh, I though you lived in Japan, you speak so well!" Several things to note - surprisingly, there was absolutely no rice served (we did not miss it) and there is even a sign at the entrance explaining this. The other thing is that all patrons seemed to be westerners, but we did not mind (the chef speaks English very well). This was the meal we always fondly remember first when we think of Takayama. And finally, after eating all the delicious dishes, the total bill was more than reasonable - we almost could not believe it. We would absolutely warmly recommend this restaurant to enjoy the famous Hida beef!
