NOW RE OPENED and REFURBISHED after a fire in May 2017. 17th Century Public House. Real Ales. Homemade and home cooked food. Seasonal menus. Campsite. Pool room and a great atmosphere.
A very friendly pub with very friendly staff, good pub grub with a good variety including a vegetarian option(not for me). Good helpings of fish and chips and steak with onion rings mushrooms chips and peas. Enjoyed it so much the first night we returned the next and both had the steak and ale pie and chips very filling, no need for desert no room!

First time booker. Will happily choose again. Nice quiet location. Well above average accommodation of it's type. Just stayed one night and maybe need two next time but on a time restraint this time. Facilities good, nice well maintained surrounds and relaxing informal design and atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff which makes such a difference. Top breakfast in the morning with a very bubbly host !!

Was staying locally to Cawston and was recommended this pub for its fresh food. Pubs as they used to be ....for families, company and good food and drink. The footy was on at the time and the villagers and incomers were together cheering England on. Food dispensed hot and tastily cooked not faffy and fiddled with. Lots of gravy and good company. Bravo to the couple that have taken this pub on!

Not the first visit to this restaurant but first review. Love the fact restaurant open early for dinner. So great after a busy working day. Probably best to make a reservation for dinner to avoid a wait. Fillet steak superb. Just the best. My daughter had burger. These are made fresh and well worth the 20 minute wait. Staff are welcoming and efficient. Also have to say the Merlot superb. All in all excellent value for money. What a lovely review, thank you very much. We are all so pleased you enjoy coming in for dinner. We take pride in using local produce and along with great chefs we think this is the secret to your superb Steak and Burger! All the staff look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Staying in the area for a short break, the revues of the Mermaid looked inviting and Iâm so pleased we found it tucked away in lovely countryside. We took a chance on getting a table as we hadnât booked, but were lucky there was one available. It was difficult to choose from such a great menu selection, but went for the pie chart. I had a Spanish pie and my husband had steak and carrot pie. Bother weâre piping hot and delicious, with freshly cooked new potatoes and vegetables. Perfect! We just about had room for a lovely summer pudding and an apple and blackberry crumble. Sadly, no room for coffee!Although it was busy, service was as good as the food. We would definitely visit again when we come back to the area for another break. I was unsure whether to do a review, as I wouldnât want too many people finding out about such a lovely homely pub, but it deserves recognition. I just hope thereâs a table next time we visit! Thank youThank you very much for such a detailed and well written review. I will pop it on my Facebook page. We will always try a fit 2s in even if we are busy, look forward to seeing you again

This is a country pub and restaurant in the privately owned village of Heydon in Norfolk.
Had lunch here while on holiday in the area; we can only hope we were there on a bad day; bar service almost unbelievably slow; food once ordered not slow to arrive; wine extremely good value. There is so much potential here

WINNERS of Norfolk food and drink awards 2016 - BEST PUB A refurbished country pub and restaurant in the heart of this Norfolk Village. Using fresh foods and local ingredients each meal whether it's a sandwich to an a'la carte dish is lovingly prepared by
The Fox seems very popular at Sunday lunchtime. We enjoyed our lunch especially the vegetables. The roast potatoes and parsnips were well cooked. We had a small dish of vegetables between us, really only enough for one, which included carrots, a little chopped cabbage, one piece of broccoli and a few slivers of leek. The dish of cauliflower cheese was delicious. Sadly the beef wasn't good. It was rather tough and had chewy strands running through it.The banoffee dessert was generous and tasty but the panacotta was small and included a wedge of honeycomb that was very hard and did nothing to enhance the dessert. The serving staff were brilliant!Thankyou for your review following your Sunday visit. I'm glad our lovely staff looked after you well.We have 4/5 choices of meat on a Sunday to choose from, all from our local butcher so its unfortunate to hear that you received beef which was not to the usual succulent quality. It seems you enjoyed the remainder of your meal, the veg bowls are top up veg as you also have roasted carrots and parsnips on your plate and cauli cheese served to the table , we of course never mind sending some extra veg if required, should you visit again, please do ask.Kind regardsVikki

Our entire family, 33 in total, were staying at the nearby Hackford Hall. We booked a Sunday Lunch here and sent them a spreadsheet of orders. Result? Amazing meal and excellent service. We kind of overwhelmed this lovely pub but they managed to feed all 33 of us with a lovely meal, with an excellent choice of roasts and a tempting dessert menu. Beer was good, especially the Timothy Taylor Landlord, and the Gin menu was awesome! Was a perfect family meal. We left without paying (as you do!!) and were mortified when the lovely landlady had to remind us via text!!! Genuine mistake and the lovely landlady forgave us! Well worth a visit.
