Thought I reviewed this earlier, but...This is a fairly new adddition in an established location. If you want lakeside dining at Lake Hopatcong, but want something a little quieter than the usual spots, take a look at the Lake Tavern. Despite the name, it is primarily a restaurant, with a good menu of well-prepared dishes - and a bar. The upstairs deck is a great place to enjoy an outside meal. On our recent visit, shortly after they opened, the forecast wasn't promising, but we decided to risk it. The friendly and efficient server made note of the threatening skies as she served our dinners. We werne't far into the meal when the rains came. The server rapidly got us to an inside table of our choice, and got all the food and drinks in to us in short order. We then watched as, without a break in her pleasant attitude, the server rushed out in the rain to bus tables. Good food, great service, great view, and a staff that is upbeat and professional - Basically, the only complaint is that Northwood isn't quite as easy to get to as the rest of the lake for dining, though it's worth the extra few minutes to find.

You wouldn't normally think of a local neighborhood bar as a place to have a great, fun, inexpensive dinner. But at McKenna's Pub, you can. Word is spreading fast in Morris County about how great the hamburgers are, and other menu choices are good as well. They sometimes put drink specials on a board here, too, with certain beer brands and wine not costing you more than a few dollars. Again, this is simply a neighborhood bar for Lake Hopatcong regulars who live nearby, and if you go more than once you're very likely to recognize a few people you've seen there before. Not fancy at all, with Coors Light stools the main decor, but entirely comfortable. There are many TVs for sports and other show watching, along with games to play (darts, Wii, air hockey, pool table). If you like eating at the bar, having conversations with new people, joking or sharing experiences with friendly bartenders, McKenna's rates high. Can't go wrong with a burger here.

Nice Atmosphere. Pleasant staff. Well made and well priced bar offerings including quite a nice assortment of on tap selections including a super fresh Irish Smithwick’s!!!!All 4 of us were very pleased with our dinners but the winner of the night was my wife’s choice of a really excellent fresh fish-n-chips!If they could just do something to address the terrible acoustics ( Really Bad - literally could not hear what someone sitting across from you was saying!!!!) and a very tough parking situation- the rating here would have been excellent.

Mason Street Pub

I’ve been going to the Mason Street Pub for years and it’s been awhile because I don’t live in NJ anymore. So, new ownership?? No noticeable difference in the place - and that’s okay with me. The food was normal good and drinks plentiful. It always a good time at the Mason Street Pub, regardless of the time of the year.

Great local pub, with food far above standard "pub fare". The Guinness was top shelf, as was the food, the locals at the bar, the bartender and the guy playing guitar. So glad I visited this place.

Casual Dining in a warm inviting atmosphere. Excellent Food and Fully Stocked Bar.

Last night we attended a wedding rehearsal dinner here for our niece. The tavern is difficult to get to sandwiched between two one ways with turnaround exits FAR down the road, I cannot stress paying close attention to your GPS enough. If you maneuver correctly congratulate yourselves if not sit back and enjoy rural New Jersey. Either way, arriving and eating there is definitely worth it. The owners are actively involved in interacting and serviing customers. The service was good and the food very good, We truly enjoyed our dinner

Gatwyns II

Can’t believe all the positives written about this place - our visit was quite the opposite. Special classic cocktail posted on the boards in the dining room was a Brandy Alexander. Waitress was stumped as to what it was. Drink took literally 10+ minutes to arrive and it was a horribly prepared and unbalanced drink. Their Bloody Mary was also one of the poorer example of my favorite’s. The French Onion Soup was terrible. Cheese burned to a crisp on 1 side - the broth was weak and more like dishwater than a hearty beef broth. The fish and chips and chicken in the basket were ok- but by the time they arrived- we were really ready to go. Big PASS on this place. Very disappointed in this visit to Gatwyns II.

They keep the prices low by requiring everyone to buy a drink. You can buy anything from water to cosmos to wine to beer. The lobster is the big hit here as are the dozen clams that come with it. These clams are the bigger ones - - a little too chewy for my taste but for the price, who could argue! Just bring CASH!!!!!

Stop in the Taphouse 15 for dinner. We were seated quickly. Our server was friend and answered every question we had. We both had a fish dish, salmon and cod. The salmon was good, but my cod wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I have to try the pizza if I stop in again.

So I have been a fan of this place for many years. Some times change is not good. What happened to the creative menu? Gone! There is nothing on that menu that is interesting or gourmet. Its same old thing everyone else is serving. The reason I went to Alice's was to try something different which I was always satisfied with. Shame they sold out. Guess I'll be going to Stonewater. They lost a really good customer. By the way food is mediocre at best. Don't expect the same quality.Thank you for sharing your opinion with us. Our new menu does have a more casual theme. And even though you aren't fond of the changes - we are very excited. Let me explain. Alice's original concept was "casual" yet, we spent years experimenting with the notion of offering complex multi-tiered presentations from the kitchen. As a customer you probably noticed our seasonal menu would offer more complex dishes in winter (when volume was lower) and less complex in summer (when volume was high). However, our trials resulted in failure. Basically, our entire facility is not equipped for the 3 to 4 pan meals which are very complex and require many steps and ingredients from a the line. This inadequacy put amazing stress on our talented kitchen staff resulting mostly in spotty results which we felt was cannibalizing our customer base. Nothing loses a customer more than long ticket times, sold-out menu items, inconsistent preparation and presentation - all of which we were struggling with.We needed to admit what we were attempting to do was not working. Since we cannot build a bigger kitchen - we had to simplify the menu - which took quite a lot of planning and reflection. The change was not, as you note, a sell out. The change was to fix a broken formula which consistently disappointed patrons and ran costs through the roof and put undo stress on our staff. The new menu (which features our most successful menu items and specials we have served over the years) has enabled our kitchen to produce more reliable product with reasonable ticket times. We wanted our wait staff to be less burdened with customer complaints and focus on their job of serving happy customers. Our dedication to an above average (if not great) dining experience is stronger than ever. We believe that casual food does not need to be cheap or insulting - it is just casual. Our menu and the ingredients we offer are under constant scrutiny for customer enjoyment and quality for price. We are not selling out.Once the heavy volume summer season is behind us - we will be offering specials which will reflect the skill and talent of our kitchen staff. Customers will see many items that they recognize. Offering these as specials is a great solution as we can plan and prepare these items with utmost control over quality and production that will please customers and not sink our kitchen operations. While we are sorry that you claim you will not be back - we hope that you reconsider one day. As a side note, Stonewater is a lovely place with a large kitchen and staff too match. I think that is a fine location for more gourmet type of presentation you are after.
