An ancient city in the Flemish province of West Flanders, Ieper (as it’s known in the Flemish tongue) has enjoyed financial and cultural status since the 12th century. Today, visitors can check out remnants of its impressive past, including ramparts that date back to 1385 and an historic moat, which now is a haven for wildlife. Anzac Rest

This is a small bar-restaurant run by Johan Vanderwalle and his wife and is a great stop-off after walking the length of Polygon Wood from the Australian 5th Division Memorial. The beer is cold and a pate salad lunch is great value and a real treat. Johan has also many relics of the First World War with a special emphasis on things Australian. And when you're there, give him a "gidday" for Aussie.

We initially sat outside to have a coffee and ended up staying for lunch and a couple of beets afterwards! The staff were pleasant and efficient. We ordered what we thought would be a light lunch but ended up being more substantial, but beautifully presented and absolutely delicious!

If you want a smart homogenised bar this is not for you. Three rooms, all fairly dark but very welcoming with a decent beer list De 12 Apostels is great fun. The front bar is full of religious artifacts. May not be to everyone's taste! The second room has lots of famous Belgiums - how many can you name! (Impress your friends by spotting Toots Thielemans). Back room is very dark.Beer is great - come here for the beer, stay for the quirkiness! Open late too!

I was leading a coach of young students on a two day battlefield tour and our hotel was nearby. The breakfast was rather basic so I popped into Maona - best thing I’ve done and the perfect place for a luscious choice of breakfast and coffee which was badly needed! All freshly made with a wide choice and the coffee is to die for... I will definitely return when I’m next over - it does both takeaway and sit in so all options covered.A superb place!!

Saint Arnoldus

Reviewed By Stewart C

We used the Saint Arnoldus bar several times during our short trip to Ypres either for a drink after watching the ‘Last Post’ ceremony at the Menin Gate and also on another occasion for a quick snack. The bar is about midway between the market square and the Menin Gate and on entering the visitor finds themselves in a long bar area stretching back to an open garden area at the rear. The bar has a very good selection of beers on tap and I tried the ‘Wipers x14’ Belgian beer which was quite refreshing. The bar area had a good ‘vibe’ about it and was being used by both British tourists and also what appeared to be locals which is always a good sign. Looking for a snack one afternoon we also sampled the toasties on offer here and found these to be both tasty and satisfying.Would most certainly visit here again if we were in the area and recommend it to others.
