As far as Hayward goes, this place is a great option. Convenient downtown location. Food and beer were okay and not too pricey. Half sandwich and soup at lunch for $15. Pretty standard brew pub fare. Lots of space for larger parties and outdoor seating for those hot summer days.

The Ranch's long and colorful history began in 1948. The Ranch was built with the wood of a pilfered train trestle from near Sacramento. In the early years, Hayward's movers and shakers gathered at The Ranch because of its proximity to old City Hall. Loca
Three of us went to celebrate Valentine's Day for dinner last night. The interior is charming, with branding irons, posters, art work made of horse shoes and nails. The walls are plank and the lighting western style. The food was very reasonable, hot and plenteous. Two of us had 10 oz New York steaks done medium and juicy with a large bowl of either split pea and ham or beef and hot bread. One had a huge salad as a side dish. There are many selections for side dishes as well. The ambiance was low lit and fairly quiet, and the service excellent. This place has been here for many years and seems to thrive, located at the confluence of Mission Blvd and Jackson.

Visiting friends in the east Bay, it was dinner time so we went to Buddy's for a simple dinner. As predicted, there was something that tempted each of the four of us. An extensive beer menu, I chose a White beer (sorry don't remember which one, it was good). I ordered the burger, medium rare, with Onion Straws. My friends ordered the Machete Sandwich (two of them) and the Assorted Fish Platter. Note that the on-line Buddy's menu seems to be totally disconnected from the printed menu we were presented. The actual menu is much more limited. My burger was an average burger; the requested onion straws were a few bits of onion hiding under the burger. The fish platter was OK, lots of calamari and two pieces of fish, maybe four overly battered shrimp. I snitched lots of the calamari as my friend said they were too rubbery for her to eat. I did not find them that bad, but nothing remarkable either. All in all, an AVERAGE at best place, but perfectly what we'd expected when we went there (other than the short menu vs the extensive on-line menu).Service was average too. Dinner for four, with four beers and an Iced Tea was around $70.
Where to eat Italian food in Hayward: The Best Restaurants and Bars
My companion and I dined here only because of what appeared to be a great deal from a major national coupon service which offered a three-course dinner with champagne with a retail value of over $100 for only $49. The restaurant is only a few miles from our home and I was curious about what seemed to be a nearby high-end restaurant. At 5:30 on a weeknight, we were the only diners. There were about six customers in the bar which is separated from the restaurant by only a mesh curtain. The noise of recorded music in the bar made it impossible for people there to talk in normal voices, so they were almost shouting at each other. We would have left before being seated if we had not purchased the coupon. The music was turned down after our request to our waitress, but the bar patrons continued to shout. The food was of good quality, thought certainly not of gourmet level. However, the bar patrons continued to shout. Fortunately the service was fast and and we left this unbearably noisy environment within an hour. There still were no other restaurant patrons when we left at 6:30.
